I have the Geforce3 in action and it is the biggest breakthough since ....the wheel...maybe not.

At £350 plus you get a lot of bang for your buck, but considering you can get a Geforce2 GTS Card second hand for about £90 I ask is it worth it?

I will get one as the is such a big leap from GeForce2. I will buy not until it's £90

Yes, but you're restrictd in what you can do with it - it's not a straight GeForce, it's modified specially for games. I'd much rather have it in the PC and take advantage of its 2D capabilities for graphic design, and use it for 3d modelling too.

Thats expensive for a graphics card, especially seeing theyre putting the same technology in an Xbox for $300!

Rip off!

lol, i'm still using a voodoo 3 2000, bought a GeForce 2 at christmas but it caused me nothing but problems (monitor was crap so that was probably the cause) and it wouldn't go over 640 x 480 so I sent it back to SR and bought a MP3 Player instead!

Heh..my GF2 handles pretty much anything I throw at it really, and the other is perfectly adequate for games at the moment..but the next generation of titles, Unreal 2, Deus Ex 2 and the like, this is where the extra power should show. Early renders of these games show some of the special features - proper curves, very high quality textures and lots of special effects - but this is still all material.

no doubt we will have a period where people buy these titles just to test their new piece of kit, but they're soon going to look past these and realise how shallow the game is if the play itself isn't up to scratch. Not suggested for a moment that either of the ones I mentioned wont be, I have high hopes for both, but the FPS genre is starting to look a little tired..

I have one in my PC... it's quicker, but it's not made a significant difference to my games so far.

Possibly because none of them are specifically coded to use it, but still.

I can play in higher resolutions, but to be honest I rarely go above 1024x768 anyway.

At least I'm prepared for future games, though...

Heh, you could be waiting a while then...

The GF3 was hailed as the biggest step up in Graphics cards since the original 3d accelerators were launched, and rightly so in my opinion. While the GF2 is predominantly a more powerful GeForce, much as the upgrades in the Voodoo series were, the GeForce3 really could be released under a new brand..it's a great deal more powerful than anything before, but the GeForce name is already associated with one of the most impressive groups of chipsets.

nVidia have no real competition in the graphics market now, and so there's no-one pushing them to develop new technologies and challenge their prices. This means that it's pretty much up to them when they advance the power and bring out another new chipset, but the GF3 had been so widely publicised that it doesn't seem likely for quite some time yet. Equally, there is no-one making them lower their prices, so expect to see the high end versions staying at £300 or so for a while. There will be the obligatory budget versions sooner or later, which will no doubt still be impressive, but I'd rather save for a proper one. Not much to go now..

Oh, and it was officially released sometime in late February, I think..
