What am I on about ? Console wars, the bane, and fuel of many a forum and playground arguments nationwide. A vast number of people who own a console or PC seem to feel that THEY are an extension of their respective machines PR campaign ! Now I love my PS2, and think Sony are great, but do I feel the need to defend it against all other machines ? Nope.
Think about it. When you/someone engages in a "my machine is better than yours" conversation what are they trying to achieve ? What is the point ? Do you hope the other person is going to "see the light" and admit your machine is better ? Would you be happy if they do ? So you're happy because you're machine is better..... :)
It's the same with games, from now on every PS2 racer will be compared to Gran Turismo 3, every survival horror to Resident Evil Code Veronica e.t.c A lot of perfectly good games are going to lose sales and good reviews because of the obsession with comparing everything to the best. I think that if this continues then the fun of games, and online gaming, will die a slow death. Wait until Metal Gear Solid X is released on X Box, its going to be endlessly compared to the PS2 version, someone is going to sit an find every little detail thats different/better/worse. Never mind talking about how great the game is ( hopefully ), or about secret parts of it, lets find how its better !!!
Think of all the millions of words wasted, all the endless posts and other things wasted on this pointless topic, you could be actually playing on your console instead, surely thats why you bought it isn't it ?
Finally, suppose that yes, the console wars fans dreams come true and overnight, ( for purposes of example, no nitpicking plz :) ) ,Sony withdraw from the market and Microsoft decide the X Box is not being released which leaves Nintendo a clear market. End result ? Well Gamecube is never reduced in price because there is no competition, games remain at £40 + and many publishers go out of business.
Yes, a bit of healthy competition is good for the industry, but do the users need to join in ? Lets just sit back and enjoy the ace games coming out every week, and learn to appreciate that everyone likes different things.
What does everyone else think then ? And just how long before someone posts a "my machine is better" message ? :)
For example, if I had a bright orange SuperStretcher with stoboscoping lighting effects and I'd paid over 200 smackeroonies for it, I'd want you to know. Likewise I'm sure you're dying to tell us about your 5200 RPM HardFarthing(tm). People make emotional investments in their prosthetic parts and it's nice to be seen to be right.
Dreamcast owners, frinstance, are looking a little limp right now and indeed were sagging somewhat even before the Sega announcement. This kind of situation precipitates the type of argument commonly seen in systems wars: the more flacid party insisting that it's not what you've got that matters, but rather how you use it, and that there's still plenty of time for good things to come. It's probably a classic denial symdrome but I'd have to be a psychologist, sex therepist or daytime television presenter to say that (and I'm not - you might have guessed).
Owners, both actual and prospective, of PS2s, GameCubes and X-Boxes are already girding their respective udders, milk-teeth and horns in case they become the underdog. Personally, if I were worried about become one dog under another, I'd find an unbrella before girding anything.
Really, we should be thankful for the purely verbal arguments for they save us the unpleasantness of actually having to play with each other's equipment.
Isn't there a species of Chimp that goes in for penile fencing? Reversing my metaphore (ouch) this doesn't seem like a bad idea. I'll take the Vectrex and meet you in the carpark.
Or is it all a matter of taste?
