So why am I taking about this. Well there are many sports games out there. But there aren't many developers who can do what EA Sports do. EA seem to create some of the best sports games out there and make games for alot of different sports. They have little competition from other developers. Konami are the only ones who really challenge them for football games.
But when you look at the games they make (most seem to end in the year it was made) most seem to be based on the hugely popular american sports like basketball, american football, ice hockey, baseball. But there are alot more sports that could be turned into decent games. As of yet there hasn't been many good tennis games.
But the thing I notice with most of these type of games is that the sequel isn't really a sequel, more like an update, may appeal to new buyers but not to people who already own last years version.
Also there is very little competition from other developers, why is this? Are there games the best that can be produced and thats why nobody attempts to make them?
I remember playing Daily Thompsons Decathalon on an old computer and it was the lind of game you had to bash buttons and wiggle the joystick frantically to win. Whats happened to these kind of games? Surley its time someone else tried to make a sports title to challenge EA for the top spot.
They are so succesful as they produce the sports games that the majority of gamers want to play, The Americans love sports so the games based on the NFL,NHL, NBA and baseball are very popular. But there are alot of sports that dont have any games made about them. Could you imagine the likes of shinty, curling, bowls, badminton, darts being made into games.
One thing we know is Sports games will no doubt remain popular, but maybe more cometition from other developers could improve the standard of the games.
As for the button bashing game, there were a couple released multiplatform around the time of the olympics last year.
Most of them were deemed to be crap though.
As for no one challenging EA, it's probably because they've got such a reputation that no one would buy anythng else.
Also, it's mainly American Sports that are done as those are, world wide, the most popular.
