A fully working motherboard isnt hard to come by, but as you say, sourcing all the bits cheaper than just buying a working one second hand may be a challenge.

No, wrong, you will not have the xbox kernel and all that jazz, unless you can get a fully guaranteed working XBOX motherboard and bios chip, but I seriously doubt you could build your own working XBOX for cheaper than you could buy one whole, if at all.
I might not be correct on this, but as far as I know, there is a 'lock detection' feature on the Hdd/mobo. If the Hdd cable is removed from either end, the HDD becomes unlocked and will not work unless you have it chipped and can run a HDD locking program.
You might want to get a second opinion on that though, but just bear it in mind before you go and buy all the parts thinking it will all clip together like Lego.

People sell bits and bobs from xboxes on ebay, if i buy the right bits and bobs i can have a working xbox.
in other words not worth the hassle. probaly wouldn't work even after that cause of all the speacil chips.
