Mobile internet access is getting more and more commonplace - but from what I've looked at the mobile providers have some nasty penalties if you should go over your allowance.

A number of mobile providers advertise their 'data' package as 'unlimited' but when you look at the small print and the FUP (Fair Usage Policy) they are actually often 500MB to 1GB per month - not quite unlimited!

A 'pb' thread recently mentioned mifi kit and personal hotspots, I thought I would add a few bits here...

MI-FI
This week the BBC have a video feature comparing Three's mi-fi router gizmo against plug-in 3G USB dongles which is worth a look: BBC mi-fi video

Personal Hotspots
Depending on the software your mobile phone uses there are a number of applications (some free some paid for) to create your own personal wifi hotspot. To do this you need a 3G and wifi enabled phone.

Apart from the possibility of big bills if you use 'too much' I've often read that the battery gets hammered so will soon lose it's charge.

This is all new to me and I'm only just starting some research - hopefully others will be able to add their thoughts and experiences.

These are the products I've come across so far:
joikuSpot View pb's REVIEW
WMWifirouter
WalkingHotSpot
HTC wifi Router Not sure if I found the official link or not?

All other recommendations welcomed...

Thanks Hmmm.

I remembered this thread when I wrote the review, it sort of prompted me to get the full version in the end.

Edited to add a link to pb's Joikuspot review.

Hopefully in time the other offerings will be reviewed along with any wifi apps others find...

hi pb,
Yes JoikuSpot 'lite' has a few restrictions along with a 'forced landing page' etc.

I haven't been able to find a free version for Nokia(Symbian) like the HTC offering. I bet someone out there has written one ;¬)

Have you noticed any battery issues using it with your 5800?

joikuspot seems to work fairly well with minimal setup. Tried it on a Nokia E51 and my 5800.

I need to check out the full version though.
