He posses the skill and knowledge to be the best, and I honestly believe that the only person who can truly compete with him is David Coulthard, I felt sorry for his team mate Mika, and Michael’s number 2 Rubens who had his win effectively taken away to allow Schumacher to win. Next season though it will be different, the Williams will probably be the strongest cars, Ralph will be challenging, Montoya will improve beyond recognition – he’s done supremely well so far, and hopefully someone else will win the championship. No Murray next season, so we’ll have a bias free commentator – James Allen I suppose.
So far Michael Schumacher has won 3 world championships with Benetton and 2 with Ferrari. He currently holds the second highest number of race wins after beating the late, great Aryton Senna's longstanding 2nd place of 42, he’ll catch Prost in about 6 races time I think. Schumacher is often described as arrogant, and big headed, and it could be argued that his racing tactics are 'unfair', but the fact remains that he is one of the most competitive drivers and one of the most experienced, and ultimately, one of the best.
When he first won the world Championship in 1994 he was battling it out against Britain's Damon Hill, and it was argued that he deliberately, (very dubiously) drove him off of the track in order to win the race and the world championship. Does Schumacher display an unsporting racing style? Unfair driving? The FIA didn't strip him of the championship, but in many people's eyes, they should have done.
The 2nd World Championship in 1995 he was rivalled only by Damon Hill who had only just recently moved into Formula 1 the year before. Again there were similar incidents regarding deliberate unfair and unsporting like driving but it was on both driver's fault, but Schumacher still won. So he has 3 world championships under his belt, he’s one of the highest paid sportsmen in the world, and is soon to become the best formula one driver of all time – beating Alain Prost’s record of wins.
Last season though, there was nothing that could be taken away from Schumacher – I feel he was a worthy champion, and has brought the whole of Italy a very proud feeling indeed. They love him in Italy, and it was evident that Michael felt emotional when he finally won the Italian Grand Prix last season when he broke down in tears. This race was full of incident, and his win, although thoroughly deserved and applauded, was somewhat over shadowed by the tragic death of a marshal who had been hit by a tyre from a catapulting Arrows. This year he is in the strongest position, only a miracle would help DC catch him now, but last Grand prix in Silverstone it was brilliant that Mika was back on form – a deserved win, and Schumacher was well and truly beaten. What a finish!
Murray Walker feels that Schumacher is the best driver, and nearly always makes a comment about this. Quite frankly, I find this annoying because it seems whatever Michael does he gets congratulated by Walker, who doesn't speak anywhere near as highly about any other driver. Many people feel he is the best driver, and he has shown he is the best, but he is a slightly arrogant driver in my view. At £26million a year he is one of the highest paid sportsmen around, does he deserve this? Who knows, but who really cares. In my opinion Schumacher will be, and probably is already, a role model for children who want to be a racing driver. He is a very experienced driver, and is still relatively young at 32 years of age. He is a champion, but can he make it four? I think so.
He has always been at a top team, so I would be very interested to see how well he'd do at a lesser team. Or even still, put him in the same team as Mika Hakkinen! Then we'd see who is the true champion.
I disagree with you about DC - he's a talented driver,
I feel DC is over-rated. He joined Williams to replace Senna. Couldn't beat Damon Hill in three seasons, went to Mclaren, couldn't beat Mika Hakkinen and is only doing it now because Mika has had bad luck. Most F1 drivers have some talent.
but he's
> actually a decent bloke
Not disputing that. He is not the greatest driver though.
So, I would love to see a different world
> champion
If there are no major rule changes, the teams will catch up and we will have closer racing, hopefully.
Still too
> early for Ralph I think
I don't think so. Ralf has a great chance next season.
I think Mclaren will get
> back on track
Always will with Adrian Newey there.
and we'll see Sauber
> making a push for 4th, ahead of BAR and the rest.
Jordan? Sorry!
I hear Sauber are ditching Petronas engines which are rebadged Ferrari engines so I feel a downturn for Sauber.
BAR and Jordan will make progress. Minardi, apparently, are taking Sauber's engines next year, so who knows, Minardi on the podium next year!
What's your favourite chee...
No wait, definitely diverting away from the subject!
I disagree with you about DC - he's a talented driver, luck has not been on his side this season, nor the last, but he's actually a decent bloke - escaped death, won the very next race after his plane crash and then dedicated his win to the pilots who died - respect.
(I think!)
There is no escaping the fact that Schumacher is German - they're having all the luck in sport at the moment, but in my view he is a great sportsman - he admitted to his foul play, knocking off Villeneuve, although he didn't admit to knocking off Damon! So I always see Schumacher in a very arrogant light, he's the best driver there, but it's all handed on a plate to him at times I feel - full credit to the Ferrari people - no one has better pit stops!
So, I would love to see a different world champion, when Hakkinnen won twice I was delighted, he may be quiet, but he's a demon driver!
Next year who could it be? Still too early for ralph I think, but the Williams drivers could be pushing for it if the car reliablility improves, I think Mclaren will get back on track, Ferrari will always be strong and we'll see Sauber making a push for 4th, ahead of BAR and the rest.
Jordan? Sorry!
> Cheese/
Don't quite see how this relates to F1.
Is he the greatest Formula driver that ever
> lived?
He is the greatest modern day Formula One driver. There is such a difference in the cars now then years ago.
Is he the most worthy world champion that has ever been at
> Ferrari?
He has made Ferrari a force again after so long.
I honestly believe that the only
> person who can truly compete with him is David Coulthard
David Coulthard is not as good as people think. He has had the best cars in his career and he keeps complaining that he can't set the car up right. David Coulthard is over-rated.
I felt

When was this?
the Williams will probably be

Williams will be there, unless a lot of rule changes become enforced. With Adrian Newey at Mclaren, Mclaren will always be at the top.
So

Are you counting Constructors Titles here?
He currently holds the second highest number of

Schumacher has currently got 50 race wins and needs 1 more to equal Prost record of 51.
The 2nd World Championship in 1995 he was rivalled only by
> Damon Hill who had only just recently moved into Formula 1 the year

Hill started in Formula 1 in 1991 I think, with the Brabham team and only qualified in 3 races I think. He got his first decent drive in Williams in 1993.
This year he is in the

I feel that Schumacher delibrately settled for second when he heard DC went out. A very uninspired drive by Schumacher. Only a miracle will cost Schumacher the title this year.
At £26million a year he is one of the highest paid

Although a lot of people forget this, F1 drivers put their lives on the line every time they drive an F1 car.
He has

Schumacher has not always been in a top team. He drove for Jordan in Belguim for his first race and was immediately snapped up by Benetton in 91 or 92. I get confused. But he showed his potential and made Benetton a force.
He posses the skill and knowledge to be the best, and I honestly believe that the only person who can truly compete with him is David Coulthard, I felt sorry for his team mate Mika, and Michael’s number 2 Rubens who had his win effectively taken away to allow Schumacher to win.
