Ok, I put a topic up in the Prime about popup ads on websites, and that’s got me going on another topic.
Adverts in cinemas.
Why?
The purpose of commercials is to make money. Ads are on IVT and C4 because they don’t have a license fee to fund them like the BBC do, hence no ads on those channels.
However, whenever we go to the cinema we are bombarded for 20 minutes with commercials before we get to the movie.

I’m not talking about trailers for movies, I mean ads for cars, drinks etc.
Used to be little local ads for local business, those cards and scratchy soundtracks.
I get that, it makes sense to promote your Indian take-away that’s “5 mins from this cinema!”.
What I object to are the multi-national corporation ads that play. Cars, drinks etc.
I’ve just paid £5 to watch this film, don’t make me watch your commercials please, I don’t care. And I don’t find them funny just because I’m in a movie theatre.

Virgin are one of the worst for advertising their own stuff.
Ads for their own brand soft-drinks, when it’s the only bloody drink they sell in their chain? Ads for their airlines, pension schemes etc.

Trailers are ok, you’re at the cinema, therefore you have an interest in movies, so they advertise what’s coming next, it’s fun to watch these before the movie, an appetiser.
But please, don’t make me sit through 20 minutes of drek commercials when I’ve already paid my money.

Yeah that's what I thought.
There is a UCG near me, but I dont spend enough time here to warrant that, I'm either in London or my evenings are tied up.

Ah well, guess I'll stick with my infrequent trips to the films I really want to see, as opposed to watching them becuase they dont cost me anything.

Not a bad idea though if you can go often enough.

That's the bad bit for most people - your bound to it for at least 12 months, they take the cash in Direct Debit styleee stright form your bank.

However, as I'd watch maybe 10 films a month there anyway I get my monies worth. Supose it depends how good your nearest UGC is and how far away it is. Mine is about a half an hours drive from home, but a two minutes walk from work and uni. So, there will be loads of time I'm up in town anyway and just decide to see a film before going home. Having the pass means I don't have to have any cash on me either :)

The worst bit is how long it goes on for - as you say, at least 20 minutes.

The pass they do, do you have to buy it for the year?

I'd get it for one month, if only 2 films interest me then it's made the money back.

40 mins from lights out to the start of the film. I now don't turn up to the box office until 30 mins after the advertised starting time and hence miss the trailers (which are getting ludicrously bad and give far too much away - I'd rather watch the film blind) and annoying ads.

However, I think my local, UGC, is one of the worst offenders. For big films there is that 40 minutes of crap before the film, for the smaller ones still 25-30 mins. However I persist with them for the mainstream viewing as they let me watch as many films I want for only £9.99 a month, nice guys.

Yeah, the USA doesnt have commercials at the movies, there was but they objected and they were removed.
Good.

Local ads for local people are ok, the local business benefits.
But we all chat and eat during the ads, and I've never thought "Wow, I'm going to go and buy (insert product here) because of the commercial I have just been forced to watch!"

It's just a personal objection of mine, advertising is everywhere I look. Magazines, movies, food wrappers.
Everything is designed to sell me things I dont want.

Am I the only one that buys something because they need it, or want it because of no other reason than I want it?
I don't mean things like reviews of games or movies, that creates an interest.

I'm asking who here has ever gone out and bought something because of an ad you saw at the cinema?

Although I understand it to be the same as in the UK now...

(although I dont kknow for sure since I've never been)

about 15 years ago, they started adding adverts at the start of in America...

Which was responded to by an enourmous number of complaints by cenima goers...

It does seem a little exploitative that a country who moral values are driven by capitalism should find offense in advertising...

Although, equally, I think they first became a standard in the eighties/early ninties when the cenimas were in a major slump, and the majority were closed down due to less and less people attending... so to help keep themselves open they started advertising... ???
