hi all,
does anyone have any ideas why a sony q120 drive won`t recognise some dvd`s?

it scans the disk, but doesn`t seem to recognise it as a dvd disc, when i look in "my computer" it shows the drive contents as blank.
very odd as it works with other dvd`s just fine.

looks like beinga duff drive, it started making some awful clicking sounds and refused to read windows so i couldn`t even run a repair incase it was a faulty installation.

anyways, i got utterly fed up with the whole thing and bought a new drive instead. i`m pleased they`re so damn cheap now, i remember getting a cd burner in my first year of uni and it being about £130.

ah, memories :D

yeah, i tried updating the firmware before i asked for help.
it`s certainly odd to see it so soon. the PC was bought new only a few months ago (i`ve already had to replace the crappy hard drive it shipped with) and i`ve not known one to be quite so erratic.

it`s worth mentioning that before i had to replace the HD and reinstall windows, the drive worked just fine with all discs, this is what makes it so curious; it`s not even a case of wimpy software, even the mighty VLC can`t find anything in there.

i`ve tried uninstalling the drive through the device manager and letting windows find it again, i`ve tried it on different IDE channels and different jumper settings (master or no-jumper), but still nothing. to compound matters it won`t recognise the windows disc anymore either.. typical :D

i`ll keep plugging away, thanks for the advice sir.

Well you can tell DVD-Rs by the fact that the data side isnt silver.

On past experience a couple of my DVD drives have done the same thing. One went like it over time and I eventually replaced it (a cleaner disc helped it for a time). The other was like it from day one, some discs it didnt want to read or considered them blank. DVD drives can be very picky about discs they'll read. If its always been like this it might be worth checking to see if your drive has the latest firmware as they do get updated so they'll read different brands/configurations of discs.

um.. couldn`t tell you. i would assume not as they`re all "proper" dvd`s.
so far i`ve had problems with Fight Club, season 1 of Spaced (season 2 works though) and season 1 of the office.

it`s really weird. i`m going to try running it from a different IDE channel as i seem to recall having problems with a zip drive once that was fixed by switching it to a new channel.
