Derby has just signed or is on the brink of signing Italian grey haired old boy Fabrizio Ravenelli on a one-year contract, but will he be enough to help them stay up this year? Last season, like the season before it, Derby County fans had a nail biting time as their club only just managed to steer clear of relegation, but it showed they are relegation battlers – they have determination, a fantastic Stadium in Pride Park and a team of youth and experience – as well as Jim Smith, the highly popular, despite faltering time to time, long serving Derby manager. Derby finished the season on a high, BEATING Manchester United at the end of the season, and that was at Old Trafford.

Derby haven’t got the strongest side in the world, but Mart Poom in goal – a superb keeper, who has struggled over the years, but will be fired up for season 2k1 2k2. Horacio Carbonari is a talented defender who has speed and agility, probably the best Derby defender who can also score a good few goals too. Darryl Powell is a powerhouse in the left midfield position, has great hair, but that’s another story. 29year old Craig Burley has settled into Derby from Celtic, utilising his years of experience in the defensive midfield position, he’s played for the Scotland International side many times, signed back in 1999 December for £3million! Yes, he is the nephew, not son, of George Burley – the Ipswich boss. Seth Johnson is just 21 but cost the Rams £3million from Crewe after impressing, he’s a very talented young player set to become a world beater I would think, the left sided midfielder has blistering pace and can deliver superb crosses.

Deon Burton, who was voted Jamaica’s best sports personality of the year in 1997, is a good striker, but rarely scores! He’s scored just 9 combined from 1999 to 2000. Still, with more experience, maybe he can help keep Derby afloat in the Barclaycard Premiership. Giorgi Kinkladze posses very scarce skills, and helped Man City avoid relegation back in 1996. A crowd pleaser, Kinkladze is a fan’s favourite wherever he plays, and should help Derby fight off another battle at the bottom! Lee Morris is incredibly quick, bought from Sheffield United for a deal which has risen to £4million he’ll be back for Derby with more than a relegation battle in mind – capped for England U21, could well become an England star.

Malcom Christie, Steve Elliot and Branko Strupar make up the rest of the main Derby players.

Derby plays a messy game of football, but they try their best, often adopting the long ball style of play. Not a rich club, but one with a good history and surroundings with excellent fans. Should finish bottom half, I fear for them – could get relegated.

Derby's distinct lack of finance will mean they will struggle, they haven't bought many players recently and could well find themselves rooted to the worst position in the league.

Jim Smith will doubtless remain at the club, even if they plummeted into Division 3, but you have to say they look like the weakest side.

Reports suggest that Ravenelli is about to 'Spurn' a switch to Derby and stay in Italy with Lazio. I honestly cannot see Derby doing well this seasona nd I think they are one of the favourites to be relegated. I too reckon they will go down, along with Bolton and either Leicester, Southampton or Charlton.

Ravenelli is a good striker and I think he could have helped Derby if he joined them. But if he decides to stay in Italy for definite, then Deby will be a definite to go down to Division 1.
