The playstation had a couple of hits, tekken, tomb raider etc,but they needed something big, something amazing.the N64,a console which had twice the power and capabilites of the 32 BIT playstation had hit the UK,and sony need a game that would send the N64 to where all the old unwanted consoles go.
our magazines and web browser started to fill with pictures of this racing game, the graphics were so good it looked as if it were real.i remember one day, i was playing on my brothers playstaion while he was reading his latest magazine.he was reading up on gran turismo, and showd me some pics,it was amazing they looked so real,i couldnt believe that it was a game.
when they release date finaly came,it was heaven on earth.gran turismo was every thing it said it would be.there was a stunning array of cars, which could be customised to suit your need for speed,it had fantastic replays and one of the only chances you will ever have to drive some of the best cars to ever grace the planet.
it was like no other racing game,we had seen before.
instead of pick a car, pick a track and race.you had to buy a not so good car with the money you have to begin with, then compeet in tournements and cups to win money so you can fix up your car, then you win more racers and by gradualy better cars.
you also had to gain license, like in the real world before you could compeet in some races.
this wasnt a game you played for 2 weeks, then sold.
aswell as the above mode of gameplay, there was also an arcade mode where you just choose your stuff and off you go.
1/1/00 - another date that will be remebered as a great day in the playstation history.
the garages re opened, the crowds took to their seats , the cars pulled into the starting line, gran turismo was back.
gran turismo 2 was basiacly an updated version of gran turismo.it continued the superb Gran Turismo looks, feel and style.there were loads more cars and tracks and a rally mode. it was the best racer ever. atleast we thought it was.
soon after or maybe even before the release of GT2, we started to see and hear about the next generation version of the game which will hit the PS2 on launch day.it would be called gran turismo 2000.
basicaly gt 2000 was gt2 with a one or two more cars and tracks, and with even better graphics.
i missed out on gt3, i didnt buy it. because i thought im going to get gt 2000 so whats the point in getting gt2.
then one day i hered the news, they were going to ake a new gt from scrap, gt3 which will not just be a more advanced gt2.
this was still scedualed fr the PS2 launch day.
well launch day came around, there was tekken tag , ridge racer , SSX , fifa 2001 and more, but no gt3.
it had been held back.
it was heled back many more times until it was finaly released today - 20/7/01.almost a year late.
it had with it incredable next generation graphics, fast cars ( sadly not as many as the previous instalment), more tracks whith even more eye candy.a fantastic sound track featuring feeder and more.
this is the game sony have been waiting for.until today there wasnt really a reasen why you must have a PS2,gt3 is that reasen.people with a PS2 will buy the game, and people who dont have a playstation 2 will break into their bank account, smash open their piggy banks and visit their generous, rich relatives.so they can buy a ps2 and the game.so some people are paying £300 for it,which it my book is worth it.
the games creator polyphony digital have out done their masterpiece once again.
If gran turismo was a woman it would be your dream woman, its beutiful, fun, clever, amazing and will make your mates so jelouse of you.
but the game has had a weakness. damage. these days we like nothing more than taking a brillient, top off the range, super car and smashing it up into little pieces.on toca sometimes i would drive the wrong way round the track to get full force hits of the other cars.but on all 3 gran turismo games if you hit another car you just slow down, and they speed up.if you hit the side you just slow down.
there is a good reasen behind this though.the car companies that have their cars on gran turismo see it as a form of advertising. i dont know much about cars,i cant name many, the only ones i can are cars on gran turismo. but its not very good advertising for the companies if players see the cars smashing up,catching fire and letting off black smoke.
i have hered that their is a possibility of damage in gt4,as some of the companies are beging to relax on the idea of damage.
gran turismo is more than a game, its a legend and a way of life.
