Games. Think of the things they have brought us. Not certain games specifically but just the experiences, feelings and joys that games bring. Now imagine a world without this. No games exist, you have never played them, you don't know what they are, and the words computer games are as alien to you as the word schwinkodilislov.

Now what would be left? We would have television, films and other things such as sport and traditional board games and the like. So if games didn't exist we would only have television programmes and films as forms of being entertained. Television is a superb media but what can it actually do? Sure, television can make you laugh; you can be scared, happy or sad. Television can give you feelings, which is quite impressive as not much else that doesn't involve direct human interaction can provide you with this.

Films are also an entertainment media that forces emotions upon you. This is basically all it does. Films and television are emotion makers; they have the ability to make you feel things that normally only crop up in real life. About the only emotion not conveyed by these media is that of love.

So what about games? What would the world be like without them? After all, they are a unique form of entertainment and games are the best and most advanced form. Other things give you emotions, games let you feel emotions, they are not forced upon you, they are yours. Let me explain. When playing games you are in the game, the game is you, you are the game. This unique interaction means that the emotions felt come from within, they are yours and as a result of this, no other form of entertainment can rival games.

So without games we would not have these experiences. We would not know the feeling to sneak past 12 guards on MGS; we would never have experienced the ecstasy of whooping your mates on Mario cart. Both very different experiences but both are unique to games, unless of course you happen to be a secret agent or a cartoon character stuck in a parallel world full of zany karts. The ability to be in the entertainment is unique to gaming. Name any film and were you actually in it, fully immersed? No, of course you weren't. Books are the same, as is anything else, you are merely a spectator, you control no-ones destiny, you are no one, you are a camera or an onlooker.

Games have often tried to be translated to different media, e.g. cartoons, films etc. These have all flopped. The game loses its special feature, the player involvement. Try to translate a Final Fantasy game into a book in your mind, would it retain its appeal or would it just become a childish fantasy book? Films to games have been fairly poor as well, which leads me to thinking that games as a media is on a different level to any other form of entertainment. The only thing that can possibly be better than games is real life interaction and experiences. Its all very well to watch or read about other peoples experiences, its another thing to be immersed in them through a game and doing the things you do in games in real life is even better. Think about it, you can read a report on a GT race, you can watch it, you can be immersed in it or you can do it for real, which one do you choose?

Yeah, try that on Red Faction, then you will experience emotions, bad ones.

As far as I'm concerned, we all live in our own personnel game. We just have to control ourselves and follow our set objectives in life without getting killed.

Yeah I would rather do the things that happen in games, in real life but what about those games that are so unrealistic that they can't be repeated in real life?

I agree with you jd, games are the best entertainment media and are a cut above the rest because of the involvement in the game rather than just spectating. A world without games? Hmmm, doesn't bear thinking about, my main form of escapism would be gone.
