After the somewhat horrific Super Mario Ball, many were unsurprisingly cynical about Fuse’s next effort. Who could blame them? With all those other fantastic Nintendo-made pinball games, what is it about Metroid Prime Pinball that makes it stand out above the rest? Read on to find out…

So far, this game features some of the greatest graphics to ever be seen on the DS. For a pinball game, that’s quite a nice achievement- what with the likes of Super Mario Kart DS and all. It makes sense that the Metroid Prime-style engine has been used for this, as the game world is based entirely from it’s Gamecube adventurers. Following this masterpiece will be Metroid Prime Hunters.

Like the graphics, the music also takes the Metroid Prime direction- So the music feels right at home here. The best part of it is that the transfer from the Gamecube to the DS has been made perfectly. However, it is not hard to believe when put next to many other titles with brilliant tunes. Other than the music, the game uses sounds from the Prime series- as well as that satisfying “ping” noise that you get from ricocheting the morph ball off the bumpers.

The game also feels very much like a solid pinball machine. Unlike the Super Mario Ball monstrosity, the ball physics are realistic and the morph ball actually does what it’s supposed to do. Sometimes, there certain mini games for the player to take part in. One of them requires Samus to take her true form, and shoot missiles at any incoming threats(useful for taking down bosses, but more on that later). The second of the two playable mini games is a wall jumping one. The latter involves the player to make Samus’ morph ball form jump from one wall to another by using the L and R triggers respectively. As every proper pinball game under the sun, high scores are the order of the day.

Half of the game’s tables feature bosses that will be familiar to anyone that has played through the Prime games. The Phazon Mines is home of the Omega Pirate, who is accompanied by an endless supply of Space Pirates. The Phendrana Drifts features the Thardus. As long as he is curled up into a large boulder, he can not be harmed. Triclops are this beast’s friend- blow them away with morph ball bombs to release yourself from their grasp. Both bosses stay on the top screen, and can be taken down with a few missiles or bombs. Similarly, the morph ball itself is quite effective against the two.

This game, unfortunately, will not last you any more than a week until you decide you have grown tired of it and cast it aside to play something else. A few more levels and a handful of unique extras would’ve made this a must have title- but only four tables means that it is doomed to be replaced and never seen again. Not even the inclusion of a multiplayer race could change that.

All that there is left to comment on really is the rumble feature that- while, is a nice touch- is, more often than not, rather unnoticeable, and isn‘t really much incentive to buy the actual game. However, this game is at least worth a try- and therefore is an ideal game if you are looking for a quick rental. Otherwise, there are better ways to spend £30(give or take a couple of quid).

Graphics 9: Some of the best graphics on the system!

Sounds 9: Fans of the Metroid Prime series will instantly recognise the game’s fantastic music.

Gameplay 8: The morph ball physics are pretty realistic, with is essential for a pinball game.

Lifespan 5: Great for dull train rides, but this is not a game that will last you weeks.

Overall 8: You may be done with the game after the first week, but it’s still a nice game to have in your collection.
