Ok, so it's a good game, granted, but...£130?

I managed to get a box for a friend at work and it filled half the boot of my car. Now, I love my games as much as the next man and, yes, he does go on about how good it is, but....would you?

Nah I wouldn't pay £130 for a game, I'd rather spend my money on something else, like, er.......a bike.

Actually the online game is damn excellent ! Its very addictive and I've found that the problem isn't really nerds. Theres a few on there, but most guys I've encountered are a good laugh and its a game that requires plenty of strategy on the missions. Its really cool when you're efforts are having an effect on territory being taken for your faction. Plus I have a couple of medals and I'm on the way to getting a third. ;-p

This game does have some problems though which any potential buyers should be well aware of...

First of all is the laziness of Capcom. The servers are all in Japan and the European and American audiences tend to be limited to 3vs3 games rather than the intended 5vs5 that the Japanese get to enjoy.

There are also plenty of games that end in connection errors and lag if you let in people with poor connections. It can be annoying when your team mates are kicked out of a game while you're left fighting 3 players.

You need to be aware of people trying to take you for a ride when you're new. Plenty of players are more than happy to help you out, but theres an economy in the game which has trade rooms where you can buy rare mechs and optional parts. Some people will try and con you and give you a lot less for something than its worth. So be careful in the trade rooms.

And finally, the small community. Theres only a few thousand players for this game and this can be both good and bad. Bad, because on quieter times of the day, it can be hard to get a game, so you end up in trade rooms chatting with other players - especially if too many people flock to one faction. It can also be good though because its like one of those towns where everyone knows eachother, so anyone who wants to be a jerk will soon be well known throughout the community and you'll probably end up hanging out with certain players quite a lot. Like having a team you stick with without the insane time demands of being in a clan.

These problems sound nasty, but at the same time, this game becomes very addictive ! Since starting to play it at the end of March, I only just took a rest from it for the last couple of days ! I've pretty much been playing it non stop all day everyday. I'm determined to give it a rest at least till mid week and play some online Splinter Cell with my cousin. ;-))

If you love mech games, I think I can pretty safely say you'll be addicted to it. ;-) Free mode is ok, but the real core of it is the campaign mode where you're helping your faction to grab territory, buy and sell mechs and optional parts and generally find out which role you best perform in when playing matches. Its not all toe to toe fighting - you can play a support role and shower enemies with artillery fire from large distances, providing cover for your team. Another cool role is riding the Sheepdog mech - a mech that can see everyone on the map, including the enemy. So you can help set traps with your team mates and also steal bases as the enemy leave openings for you to take advantage. :-)

And of course theres also mechs with sniper rifles for all you guys that like to find a nice position and pick people off. ;-) The sniper rifle has to be manually aimed with no lock on available, so its a real test of your aiming ability. ;-)

I just need an extension of my room to be able to find somewhere to keep the controller.

The original game is excellent - the online game has potential, but too many nerds.

Then he got really pished off when GAME re-stocked.

Can't you just make a rack for your joypad out of toilet-roll tubes and Meccano?

I almost did buy this - on a few occasions. Something held me back every time though.

Must have been common sense...

Is this the one where you have the big console type joystick affair? Looks cool, even if it is a bit cumbersome.
