Why is it when I need to upgrade my PC or get a new console, I feel I have to almost re-mortgage the house to pay for the things I need? Ok, so there’s an obvious answer to that, everything costs money. But it gets very depressing when I can’t afford to keep up with technology when every one around me is talking about all the exciting new stuff that is coming out.

Take this week for example. There I was expecting to gain a small sum of money to put in the bank and save towards a Gamecube next year, in the hope that I’d be able to buy it on the release day. Well, as it happens our freezer broke down at the weekend and after some frantic price comparisons on the internet, I made my weary way to Comet to get another one. As is the case with such journeys my eventual downfall was in entering the electrical retailer and heading for the entertainment section while my wife made the decision on what new freezer would go with the cupboard doors…

Now, I’ve got a DVD with full Dolby 5.1, as you may know from my reviews, but I really wanted a system that would cope with TV and video surround as well and my midi system was in dire need of replacing, so when I spied a nice Sony surround mini system, I couldn’t help but drag the wife over and let her watch as I gargled my approval in a way that would make Homer Simpson proud. I could see my birthday money fluttering away in the wind before I’d even had a chance to get my grubby mitts on it….

To cut a long story short, I now have no money for a Gamecube. (I hope to change that by next year, but it may well now be July) However, I also realised that there were so many other things out there that, even with the funds for the Nintendo machine, I wouldn’t stand a chance of being able to afford until they actually started going out of fashion. My internet access has just run out too and this now means I am pressured to get an ISDN line to satisfy all my wife’s missed calls and her need to phone people while I merrily chat away on this forum. More expense to fit the thing and pay the monthly fee means even less chance of spending money on something so important and life threatening as more PC memory or another Dreamcast game. PS2? I’ll be lucky to see one this side of the PS3!

If these things were cheaper, I would be able to get more. Simple maths, I know, but effective and looking at the cost of these items in other countries begs the question, why are they all so expensive over here? Part of this is the lovely government’s idea that taxing should be as high as they can make it without the people sending around a lynch mob, but that doesn’t account for all the extra cost we Brits have to pay for our games and gadgets. Companies must love the way they can sell anything to us at inflated prices, but surely they’d sell far more if the cost of buying them was a bit lower. The PS2 is a case in point. Ok, so the PS was the same price when it first arrived in the shops, new technology and all that, but it soon dropped down and many more units were sold after that. It’s still selling well because parents are buying it cheaply for their younger kids, but then the Megadrive still sells for this reason as well. Actually, saying that, the Megadrive 3 is very nice and portable too…..

Oh well. I guess it’s back to the mad money making schemes and the saving, in the meantime I just hope that the companies all see sense and lower their prices. Some hope, eh?!

Cash is definately a problem, Ive been saving up for a GBA but I have to get rid of the 19" monitor I found in a skip first to raise the funds. It should be sold within 2 weeks I reckon, until then Ill suffice with my Playstation which still has a load of good games and quite cheap to. :-)

To be perfectly honest I cant remember gaming being this cheap, ever. There are quality games for the Dreamcast, Playstation and N64 selling for £10 - £20 which isnt bad at all. Of course Ild like to have the cash for a PS2, I really would like to play Onimusha as Ive heard its like Resident Evil with Samuris, but Ive got my dissertation to do now so I can wait.

Hey if I had a PS2 Ild probably fail my Masters Degree anyway.

Yeah your right there, my phone has cost me money and grief, you think you will use it loads, but in actual fact you don't use it that much, but in some circumstances it is extremely useful.

I completely agree as when i brought my computer it was top of teh range with loads of games that i could play on it. Now i have just brought a Dreamcast because ther are no good games that i can be bothered to by for P.C without having to buy a better graphics card because i dont really want to have to wait ten seconds each time i turn the corner.

Each time a new console comes out, it beats the older version which you always seem to have. I cant stand PS2 gamers that say Dreamcast never had its day. What are they talking about. If you walked into Games Room one and a half years ago all you could see was 'new games for the Dreamcast' and now they are saying 'oh yeah Dramcast never was good blah blah blah' it gets me so madddddddd!!!. Just wait till the GameCube comes out. Then people will laugh at the people who own a PS2, and they will say ' PS2 was awful blah blah blah'

You get my point

Huh! You complain about being out of electrical fashion!

We haven't got Sky or Digital, we don't have a DVD player and we've got metered 'Net access!!!

At least you've got a DVD Player, so you can actually WATCH what you win from FAD!

One of the solutions to your problems could be in importing from Japan and America, where buying electronical goods will probably save you 60%-80% on the rrp over here.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PB!
