I figured, I'd better stick up one of my own...
There was a post a little while back, where it was argued that song lyrics were superior to any classical poetry...
Although, whether this is the case or not is a matter to be figured out there (a little farther down the DVD and Movies forum I think?)
However, I was curious to know, what songs, and/or lyrics, have really made a difference with you?
Whether because they identified with what was happening with you at that time of your life...
If you thought the lyrics were just cool, and were the part of the song that kept you humming it for the rest of the day, maybe even made you buy the album and discover a band?
The lyrics, of a song you may even loathe, but for some inextricable reason, you never seem to have forgotten?
Swim
Buck Rogers
Seven Days In The Sun
etc
all of them there all cool thank u Grant for your talents :0)

Tool - 'The Patient'
A groan of tedium escapes me,
Startling the fearful.
Is this a test? It has to be,
Otherwise I can't go on.
Draining patience, drain vitality.
This paranoid, paralyzed vampire act's a little old.
But I'm still right here
Giving blood, keeping faith
And I'm still right here.
Wait it out,
Gonna wait it out,
Be patient (wait it out).
If there were no rewards to reap,
No loving embrace to see me through
This tedious path I've chosen here,
I certainly would've walked away by now.
Gonna wait it out.
If there were no desire to heal
The damaged and broken met along
This tedious path I've chosen here
I certainly would've walked away by now.
And I still may ... (sigh) ... I still may.
Be patient.
I must keep reminding myself of this.
And if there were no rewards to reap,
No loving embrace to see me through
This tedious path I've chosen here,
I certainly would've walked away by now.
And I still may.
Gonna wait it out

Both of those songs made me realise something. Half the World Away's lyrics are just perfect to describe the way I'm feeling right now.
And Aquiesce... Well, just listen to it and take into account I have 3 siblings. The chorus, is what you should listen out for.
In fact at sixth form I used to decorate all of my notepads with lyrics, it was cool.
Anyway back to Pulp, the lyrics are witty and clever, but often deeper too, making them much more to me than the jokey band many take then for.
And the song 'Cocaine Socialism' was fantasic, based upon Tony Blair inviting Jarvis Cocker to his house shortly after coming into power. "Would you like a line of this? Are you a socialist?"
Another band whose lyrics I always liked are the Bluetones. Again they have a degree of humour, but there's certainly more to them than that.
"When I am sad and weary,
When All my strength has gone,
I walk around my house and,
Think of you with nothing on."
I find I'm always drawn to the lyrics of a song, so when I hear the "I love you, baby" line repeated over and over again, or "Look at me I'm the king of my castle" I just think it's naff, and think such songs would be better without lyrics.
I also like odd lyrics, "The nature of uncarved blocks is how to describe, what's hard to describe"
And repetition can be very effective if it's the right line, delivered in the right way.
"You know he don't give a fun about anybody else" SFA, The Man Don't Give a Fun.
And boyband lyrics are so lame. They're always 'look at us we're so emotional, please buy my records, and put my poster on your wall'. And the fact that I can't immediately quote any just goes to show how poor they are.
