Ok, there’s been a lot of talk recently about teen flicks, are they good, what they offer in terms of entertainment etc.
And, noticing that a lot of posters are under 20, I’d like to mention one person that you should all seek out:

John Hughes

This guy invented the “teen” genre back in the 80’s, and everything else since has paled in comparison.
Hughes wrote and directed a number of movies about and aimed at the teen market, but did it without being patronising or cliché. Yes, looking back you can chuckle, but that’s because his ideas have been ripped off left right and centre.

Some of his films:

The Breakfast Club – a group of kids kept in detention one Saturday morning, all different types of people, all end up being friends after nothing but talk.
A classic, brilliant movie with very young Emilio Estevez, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Anthony Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald.

Some Kind Of Wonderful – Eric Stoltz, Mary Stuart Masterton and some others I cant remember. Guy falls for posh girl, she doesn’t like him. A formulaic story, but lifted by genuine emotion and good acting.

Pretty in Pink – John Cryer, Molly Ringwald and others. Zany, wacky guy falls for school princess who is dating the football hero type. Unrequited love and lust. Classic line “He’s a really good kisser…wow…he must practice on melons or something”

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – if you haven’t seen this movie, you really shouldn’t be posting in a movie forum. Matthew Broderick, Jennifer Grey and others. Popular guy at school, everyone loves him, luckiest kid in the world. Bunks off school for the day with his girlfriend and best mate Cameron.
I cannot recommend this movie highly enough, an absolute masterpiece.

Weird Science – 2 nerds create the perfect woman with an Acorn Electron and a porno mag. I need say no more.

There are loads more of these movies that he made, but the names escape me right now. However, if you haven’t seen any of the above or heard of John Hughes, you really should do before you start thinking today’s teen movies are that good.
He wrote genuine scripts, with emotions and feelings we can all identify with (apart from Weird Science, which is just wish fulfilment)
Teen movies today, to me, seem to be pretty, happy rich kids with no problems trying to sort out their little melodrama within 90 mins, whilst the hit single is played over the “they finally get it together” scene.

Doesn’t even come close to John Hughes back in the 80’s.

Hughes is great - not only captures a time in his films but a feeling. I used to watch Feris B. when I took a day off school, all wraped up nice and warm in bed with the video playing. I also have friends who insist Wierd Science is the best film ever, though I don't agree. Pity Molly Ringwald - my favourie of his stars, if only cause I have a thing for red hair - is languishing in B Movie hell. Just reading about her in the Sky TV magazine today - apearing on Box Office this month in a film with Kylie Minogue. Reading the plot it sound suspiciously like Scream... bu I'm going off at a tangent.

Definetly agree with Goatboy - everybody should be forced to watch Feris B's Day Off and The Breakfast Club in particular. Oh for times when "teen movie" didn't mean cheap t1t and fart gags...

He wrote that, Chris Colombus made it.

Interesting fact:

Hughes' "Home Alone" script was about a teenager left at home over a spring break being terrorised by 2 criminals intent on breaking in.

But the studios changed it when Uncle Buck made Culkin a star and thought this would be a nice little vehicle for him.

Hence, Home Alone

I remember Ferris Bueller and Weird Science and would have to agree that they were two very good movies that i have watched on more than one occasion, but i was not aware that John Hughes wrote these films.
