I can’t remember if I've seen this topic already...

I'm gonna write it again anyway, so tough :)

Sex in movies...

To be honest, I haven’t seen many movies with a lot of sex in while...

There seemed to be a point in the early nineties when movies were competing with each other as to how much sex they could put in a flick without it being classified as porn.

(Although I suspect the digital special effects trend has replaced that in recent years?)

Although, it may just be that since I'm getting to be a bit of a doddery old sod that I'm only really going to see movies which interest me, and not movies because they had great effects or loads of sex?

I was wondering though...

When is sex valid in a movie?

When is it appropriate to have sex in a picture, and how graphic should it be?

For me, an obvious answer would be that sex is valid if its part of the storyline... Although how graphic? ... When is a movie using sex exploitatively...

When watching a clockwork orange... although the violence is at time gratuitous, it was a part of the event, and therefore, for me valid...

Though most popular films don’t follow this basis...most movies using sex to sell the movie, not to enhance the story?

When is sex exploitative?

When is sex acceptable, and how graphic should it be?

When does a movie become pornographic?

What I’m really after, is, should anyone be all that bothered, once the rating hits 18 how graphic the sex is in the movie? … If the person doesn’t want to see the movie, they can always leave?

Or am I wrong?

Just cos it confuses me? :)

Yeah, I covered this a few weeks ago (and won!), but it's always good to challenge moral censorship.

I'll sum up my last view on this:

I cant watch sex but I cant watch violence.
Eh? That's not right.
You can legally have sex at 16, but you cant watch other people? Makes no sense, draconian, religious guilt hangover.

To quote Lenny Bruce:
"You think sex is dirty? You think I'm wrong for enjoying my body? Take it up with the manufacturer, not me"

Sex in movies, sometimes necessary, often there because if a certtain star gets her kit off, more people will go see it!

If it's a rape scene, then this is usually pretty vital to the plot, so I suppose it would be more effective if shown in all its gory detail.

In a typical action movie, when the hero 'gets in on' with the young female star, it's normally done with soft lighting and gentle music, maybe a blowy curtain, or some gentle rolling sea sounds.

Half of the time it needn't be there, and oly is because 'sex sells'. Then I remember Terminator, and the sex scene is rather important to the plot, given that Kyle (was that his name?) impregnates Sarah Connor with her son John Connor, saviour of the future....

Then there's Boogie Nights. Not porn, but about porn. The sex in it is pure 'porn sex' hammed up to the full. It's perfectly relevant to the movie though, so acceptable?

So what's the downright weirdest sex scene in a movie?

I remember the one in Killing Zoe, in which clips of an old 'Dracula' movie keep coming up on sceen during the act...

It depends, because you can bet that a fair few people watching it will be below 18. Sure a person can always leave, but if you just say "its 18 rated, do anything" then you'll always get some companies which will take this to an extreme. Should we be bothered ? I guess that depends on everyone's individual conscience......

Get watching Whipped, abusivly funny film about a woman who plays three guys (scammers) at their own game. Hilarious, brilliant and so obviously the work of a man who was thinking like a woman for a day.
