Over the last 5-7 years, I have noticed that films, to me, seem to be getting a lot better.

I don't know whether to put this down to the Devonshire Schools of Acting or Special 'FX'

They certainly do help, and to think of all the films that couldn't have been, well... Hollowman, for one, was full of FX, not just because the main actor (Kevin Bacon) was digitally edited out but because of all the views and water effects etc.

The Matrix was another one. Although I wasn't a big fan of the somewhat gloomy atmosphere the film gave off, I did like the effects that were used for the gunfire, bullets and the gravity-defying Kung Fu! The camera paning and positioning was definitely some of the best i'd see for a long time. But I think, that if it weren't for the effects in the film, I wouldn't have watched it.

Now don't put me down and knock me because i'm no film critic and I don't claim to be, but from a casual-filmer's point of view, if you will, I see effects as not only as an essential addition to the film, but in some cases, especially in this day and age, as the main component in the films success?

I doubt that Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon would have appealed to the male audience like it did if there wasn't quite the same amount of emphasis, drama and effects put on the fighting.

It seems, that once where the romantic and dramatic storylines of the Pride and Predjudice's and the Sense and Sensability's were enough to please an audience, we have moved on to an age where even in love stories, special effects are needed, for the audience to give some instant appreciation.

Quite sad really...
