I saw "Evolution" at the weekend.
Enjoyable enough for a summer movie.
Except for one point that had me foaming at the mouth and wanting to tear down the cinema.
It advertised, very strongly, a certain anti-dandruff shampoo.
So much with one of the characters (after suggesting that this shampoo would kill the aliens due to a chemical component), "I use it. See how non-flaky and soft my hair and scalp are?"

People laughed at this line. Sure, it was delivered by the moron character, so could sound funny. Until, this shampoo was used against the aliens. Many bottles are used, many labels are shown to the camera.
And, the final scene is of 3 main characters doing a commercial for this product.
"But it's the characters in the movie, they're capitalising on their fame to advertise it, it's ironic" was the argument used by a mate.

Wrong.
This scene was 3 stars, holding a genuine name brand shampoo and saying "It's great"
Excuse me?
I didn't pay £5 to watch a bloody commercial for this product, how dare you use this movie to promote that.

Now, I'm aware that product placement is used heavily in moives. Castaway used Fed Ex, Bond uses BMW and some watch etc etc etc.

Why?
Tomb Raider is being advertised with a make of mobile phone seen often, as is the Spiderman trailer I posted a link to.

I find this disgusting that companies can slip their products into a movie and I have to sit there and pretend it's ok.
Commercials on tv are there to raise revenue for the station.
That's why the BBC doesn't have them, license fee takes care of that.

But I paid my money to watch this movie, they've already made their profit.
Don't make me sit there and watch a damn advert for products that I dont want and dont need.

The line between art and commerce is blurring more and more, and I personally find this disgusting.
Go watch a movie and spot how many products you see in there.
Austin Powers 2 was a criminal offence for this.
Wayne's World at least made a joke about it.

But, you can see all manner of products in movies, simply because the company paid to be associated with that movie.

And, back to Evolution, the shampoo was used because the characters claim it contained "Seratin".
It doesn't. The company I work for creates the fragrances in this product, and the Seratin they mentioned is only available in one shampoo, because raw material cost prohibits mass market usage.

So, you can't even use the excuse that this brand was mentioned and featured so heavily because it was necessary.

It wasn't. It was a pure and simple exercise in promotional funding.

I'm off to lay in a dark room now until my head calms down.

Just saw Gary Oldman selling mobile phones on the tv.

It was exactly what I thought it would be.
Big stupid fun with jokes about aliens and body functions.

It was just the commercial at the end that got me.
But I've gone on about that long enough.

Fair points.

It's not the fact that these products are in the films, I'm aware that revenue needs to be generated somehow, the cost of movies is spiralling.

But what I do object to is a blatant promotion, Evolution is on a scale I haven't seen in a long time.
I sat there stunned as movie characters had a commercial at the end of a film for a name brand.

Movies are fantasy (generally), but the onset of advertising, to me, is robbing our creative output and sticking labels and tags on them.
"Saw the movie? Buy the wardrobe!"

Just my opinion, but I think that's wrong

A plot helps but films like Saving Private Ryan, Thin Red Line, Pearl Harbour, The Siege, e.t.c rely on the plot alone to sell the film. Welll maybe effects as well to some degree. I thik that in most cases brands placed in movies just raise awareness of a certain brand/product.

Maybe they did buy it because they saw it in a movie, but if they like it does it really matter ? To some degree everything we do is kind of influenced by something. Why am I even on these forums ? Because I saw the ad in the SR magazine. The actual phone is good value anyway plus the extras you get.

Is it a herd mindset because a lot of people suddenly like something ? By very definition a popular product has to have loads of people who own it. Personally I'd love one of those bluetooth hands free kits from the tomb raider film, because they are way better than any other handsfree I've seen.

So by sticking in name brands, you dont need to concentrate on plot etc?

"It's ok, who cares if this movie's any good, we'll make our money back through sales"

And if you didnt sell any of these phones until the movie, that speaks volumes for the people that watch Tomb Raider, if they're so easily influenced to buy a product because they saw "one in the movies"

That mentality scares me on a profound level.

Idiotic, herd mindset that will seek out something simply because Lara Bloody Croft used on.

Can't see advertising in movies ever stopping in the considerable future. Want an example why ?

Where I work we had twenty of the ericson t20 tombraider gift packs delivered three weeks ago. The display boxes sat on the shelf with no one paying a blind bit of interest to them and no a single customer bought one despite the fact the T20 is an okay phone for the price. Then the film is released and this weekend we sold the last one, selling five of any phone in a week is good because we're a small store but 20 in a week ? Advertising works is a sad fact. When I watch a film I concentrate on the action and the story, not the products. So what if Nokia phones are used in the matrix ? Surely its better to have a known make than some made up brand. A lot of films sell advertsing because it brings guaranteed revenue and leaves less reliance on the film being a hit. Spiderman could be a good film, but what if loads of critics, for no good reason, decide to slaughter it in reviews ? The film has a massive budget but it needs to make this back somehow.

"Don't tell mom, the babysitter's dead"

Scary thing is, it's already been done.

Movie Idea:

Okay, I don't have a title yet, but it's about some kids that are at home with a babysitter, when she has to dash off in a hurry. The kids are left alone, and trash the house. This all happens in the first 20 minutes.

Next one of the kids realises that 'Mom' will be home in just over an hour, and that they have to tidy up.

The eldest kid grabd the DYSON vacuum cleaner, and we get shots from the 'DYSON-cam' (with logo in shot) for the next 10 minutes, as we see mess after mess sucked up. All of the time the eldest kid is making comments about how easy it is.

Next another kid grabs all of the dirty clothes and throws them into the DYSON washing machine. Surely it can't get those clothes clean in so little time? But yes it can, it's a DYSON!

The final scene of the movie involves the youngest child hugging the DYSON vaccum cleaner, then kissing it, before it heads onto it's spaceship and leaves for home.

I really need some help in financing this movie though. Any ideas? ;-)

background shots are non-profit.

It's when a product features heavily (M&Ms in ET, Bond movies, Tomb Raider with Jeep, Nokia (same for The Matrix)

I find this an abhorrent idea, but then I take movies too seriously apparently.
