Most modems should work under Linux, you just need the right drivers.
Ok, this is a quote taken directly from my mate as to what will work:
"All external dialup ones which understand AT commands, most internal ones, and any cable modem which can be connected with an ethernet card, using PPPoE or straight TCP/IP with DHCP."

I haven't had problems running any of my modems under Linux, try asking around on some IRC rooms dedicated to your distro (for example, I use #debian on openprojects.org). Alternatively, search for some help on the web...if you're used to Windows, Linux can seem very unfriendly, but you can hack a lot of things in to working if you give them some time.
Any Rockwell chipset external modem should work justfine. Most internal modems will give you grief.
