Back in the day of the Snes and Mega Drive both companies were working overtime to make their console your purchase but have a think without the other opponent would they have been as good and sucessfull? Propably not because if sales were only one way and going smoothly then why worry and work more than needed.
We all argue about which is better but I've seen it all too many times and what it boils down to is the console you prefer is probably the best one for you.
If all you want to play is pokemon then get the game boy, If you want mario and zelda it's the 64 and if you want the Playstation titles then you get a PS1 and so on.
Just having one console would be far easier on us to make sure we can play all wanted games but it has a down side, Some fantasize about all companys working together and creating a super console, To me that would be the worst thing to ever happen in the games industry because the console might not be up to your standard and then whats the alternitive? Having other consoles gives us a choice to which one suits us best and personally i think there's quite a nice selection.
Sega have currenly backed out of the hardware section and have moved onto multiformat software so its all between Microsoft,Sony and Nintendo.
