I'll start with Macbeth: If we didn't have Macbeth then half of the horror movies wouldnt be around, I mean the things he covers in that, Lady Macbeth asks evil spirits to posses her, the murder, commit treason, witches conjure up potions and manipulate people. If you put that in a multimillion pound film now, it would be an 18 horror movie! So there's the first thing he is the origional horror movie scriptwriter.
Recently I won gameaday, and I got 10 Things I hate About You. This is based upon Shakespeares The Taming Of The Shrew. It is a brilliant film purely because it has a superb story, thanks to shakespeare. He was a brilliant.
Now there's Romeo and Juliete. The classic tragic love story, which had millions of people crying for 500 years. Where would we be without this film? OK so there'd be no ROMEO AND JULIET with Claire Danes and Leonardo Di'Caprio, but think of what else there'd not be. Shakespeare In Love (Well that would be a good thing because we wouldnt have had to have gone throught Gweneth's awfull acceptance speach!), no Titanic (It was good for its day), NO Pearl Harbour (Titanic 50 years later and on the other side of the earth, really), no Sweet Novmber (out at cinemas now, I havent seen it, I'm just going by the trailer!) and no Love Story (from the seventies, my mum loves that film!). In fact we wouldnt have half the stories and film that we have now if it wasnt for Good Old Shakey.
No A Midsummer Night's Dream, this would mean that Rupert Everet and a whole host of people would have appeared in that film. HTis owuld meant that the new film, Get Over It, wouldnt have been made as it it based on that film.
I cant think of any more right now but im pretty sure that there's more.
The point of my list of Shakespears plays? Becasue if it wasn't for him, we couldn't enjoy most of the films that we have today because most of them take ideas from his plays!
So really it is a good idea that we have to suffer Shakespeare's plays at school, because when we do that, then we can understand all the films we see at the cinema for entertainment!

I hated Shakespeare when it was taught to me, but went to it when I wanted to a few years later and I now take a great deal of pleasure from reading it.
I love "Hamlet" by Branaugh (sp?), I think it captures the spirit of that play perfectly.
Titus Andronicus with Anthony Hopkins was ok, but you couldnt film that one properly, wouldnt get released anywhere.
Top play, you can keep Tarantino, read that play for ferocity.
The kenneth brannagh Hamlet film ! Agh ! had to watch this a year back in last stages of A Level english lit. HAted it at first but now I'm getting ready to head off to Uni and have had a year out I realise Shakespeare is actually quite good, the very fact it has so many meanings is what makes it good.
Not sure about "We wouldnt have Pearl Harbour" etc, I dont remember reading about old Will attacking the ships, but I do get your point.
If you like Shakespeare go and rent "Hamlet" with Kenneth Branaugh, the only version that's available uncut. 4hrs long but one hell of play turned into a brilliant, brilliant play. Same with "Much Ado About Nothing".
Say what you like about Kenneth Branaugh, he turns the plays into films without dumbing them down and setting them in modern times
That's my opinion anyway (and I'm right, hehe).
