>Random bouts of uncontrolled sobbing, followed by "I HATE you Sega" as yet another Saturn owner realises that their console has been announced deceased, decrepit, gone from this planet and is now in the afterlife of video gaming heaven or hell, should be a thing of the past<

Meh? Wah? You mad? (Of course) Surely every Sega Saturn owner knows that their console should be on the scrap heap along with A reg Vauxhall Nova's, Prince Charles’s traditions and the highly unpopular Panasonic 3DO (pronounced "D'oh D'oh D'oh)? Or am I being presumptuous?

Gaming as we know it, or like to think we know, will evolve progress and continually update itself, with new consoles being released far more frequently making older gaming monoliths, like Sega's unsung Saturn machine. Evolution is a superb thing, the battle of the fittest - he who stands higher will catch that flying fish from the not so common Whirlwind, the most popular will succeed and take all glory. Gaming will evolve, times will change and opinions will be formed. People will let their opinions be heard, biased or otherwise, and people will make decisions based on another's thoughts. We help each other out - guidance from experience is a fine thing.

However, when I hear of how I have been an idiot for buying a 'dead' console, I have to re-analyse my opinions on the person talking the rubbish. Do not fear, this is not another "You should have bought a Saturn, it's better than a PlayStation, blah, blah I'm so trendy, blah, blah, blah" post that some people may, or may not have had the audacity to write. It's sad, but the 'lives' of our beloved consoles are determined by sales, and sales only. A great many things of course determine sales, but when it comes to the "Saturn versus PlayStation" argument, sales were all down to who could afford to advertise, which console was easiest to develop for, and who gave out free biscuits at launch meetings. Sony obviously gave out Budweiser, hampers and money off vouchers, whilst Sega offered a soggy digestive. Nothing at all to do with the incredibly complex programming sequences and programs that had to be performed and learned on the lesser of the two 32bit powerhouses.

So, why do consoles die? THEY DON'T! But apparently they do. Even the fantastically supreme Dreamcast has 'died', but I don't really care because I like this afterlife - it's cheaper, it's less pressurising and it's purely about the games.

"Mr Sony employee? Is my PlayStation dead?"

"Of course not little scamp, the PSone is the fore front of gaming, with new titles being released everyday - it's the best console you can buy for under £100"

"Isn't the PlayStation 2 the fore front of gaming Mr Sony employee?"

"The PlayStation 2 is Sony's latest masterpiece, which is actually a home entertainment system compiling of a top of the range DVD player, CD player and will also play games designed for the PSone and for PS2"

Hmmm.

The classic hmmm. Who's going to survive? I emailed Sega a while back, when they were still producing the Dreamcast and was informed that they would not let their "unique offering fail", in many respects they haven't failed - I don't consider a console that's had over 30 must have titles in it's first year a failure, do you? And yet it's dead. Sega have had to evolve, because they couldn't compete. They shouted and shouted, but the people they were shouting at were wearing Sony branded earphones. Only the Dreamcast owners heard their cries and took up their offerings of such original titles of Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Metropolis Street Racer, Samba De Amigo - Virtua Tennis.

So Sega's Dreamcast 'died'. It's a foul market, full of lies, hatred, betrayal, sleaze, corruption and anarchy and yet we all love gaming, we all play the games because they're the essence of life - gaming cannot hinder your world, it can only help (unless you buy absolute offal), and we're drawn, captivated and enlightened by stories of big chief Sony boss mocking Bill Gate's X Box, "it has no games!" and then Microsoft release PS2 destroying screen shots of Project Gotham, Jet Set Radio Future and other forthcoming titles.

Everything's planned, I wouldn't be surprised if they're all working for someone, the big cheese of gaming, some Maurizio shifty looking fella in an underground cavern living it up in all his riches - (imagine that Al Pacino husky voice now) "Sega - you make the PS2 look good, but pull the plug on the Dreamcast - no advertising, oh and Mickey here's your new boss - so what if he's a monkey?"

Maybe that's a bit extreme, but how long will the PlayStation be alive for? It's already had a heart transplant, given birth to the PS2, but when will the games stop? Dry up? Will they ever? I hate the market - fat greasy Spaniards called Carlos telling me how ripe his bananas are, and how they only cost "Pand 4 Pand". It's all rigged, gaming is a conspiracy, it confuses me, but I never want to let go.

So I'm stuck, stuck in a world of 'Damn you Empire Direct, why is your customer service so atrocious? I need my television back!’ I'm stuck in a world of escalating prices, of brainwashing of silly little boy and girl groups called Steps, and I'm sick of it all, but what else is there to do? The mind is a powerful weapon, nothing is more so, but when one mind can control a hundred million others'? "Buy a PS2 because it's got a green light"

"oooh - green light >Sony fans salivate and dribble at the mouth"

I ask not that change take place, but I am on the verge of buying a PlayStation 2 for the second time (Just £300 away), so don't have a go - 'your' console isn't the almighty monstrosity that you may think it is - the power lies in us, them and many, many Japanese people called Shigeru, Tanamaziki-san and Yu. Do they dictate which machine is dead?

Ok, by this point you've probably noticed that I haven't been gone for very long, and that this post is as consistent as the England cricket team, but try and take away some thoughts - discuss anything that has been said, I've said a lot, my fingers will not thank me, and I won't be able to post many gigantic posts in the future as my hands simply cannot take the strain of writing anymore.

Cheers for reading, your console isn't dead, but just so I please the retailing jerks that tell me otherwise...if you need me, I'll be in the after life - the gaming afterlife, having great fun on oooh, F355 I think.

Happy Gaming.

I have a Dreamcast and although I couldn't care less if it was described as dead or not, I agree that a console is never dead until you, yourself in person has had enough of it - got the gaming pleasure that you desired from it, and have in general spent wisely and learned something through playing your games and consoles.

I am a huge wrestling fan, despite standing at only 5foot 8, I am decidely in agreance that the best wrestling game is WWF Smackdown, so number 3 looks so good that I may have to get a PlayStation 2 - but how long before that console is declared no more? Will that one ever die? Or perhaps Sony has insurance on their black machine, should anything happen - like the GCN or X Box steal it's thunder, making PS2 obselete.

Anyway I think this is a great discussion point, I have recently been playing Virtua Tennis and think it's one of the best games I have ever played - the Dreamcast is certainly not dead, Maurizio I doubt is the boss of everything, although I am 100% certain that Monkeys do in fact run Sega through and through.

thanks,

The thing is, is a console really dead, if you still can get enjoyment out of it?

Some might say that the N64 is practically dead now, given that only a handfull of games will now be released in this country for it.

To me it's still thriving. There are games that I own that I haven't finished with. My brother has a wide range of games I can borrow that I haven't had the chance to play yet either.

To me this console still has a rather long life, and without spending a penny either!

then there's the second hand market. I can gain further pleasure from my 'dead' console, surely until I've played every single game that was available for the system.

I never played a Saturn. When it was released I was happy with my SNES, and didn't have the money to splash out on a new console. Yes I missed out on some great games, and that's a pity, but it was 'dead' in the market sense before i got to experience it.

Another point you raised, is the success of the PSX hampering the PS2? The software releases on the PSX are still as healthy as ever, so if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

People say that the Xbox and GAMECUBE are being released too late. Maybe the PS2 was released too early?

Hmmm, the lack of posts here could indicate that everyone is playing their consoles, or maybe that the title is pathetic. Either way, the allure of a non titled topic with no title certainly attracted the crowds, and Webmaster's deleting hammer.
