Have you guessed what it is yet? Well I can reveal that the topic is depth. All games are starting to pick up a lot more depth because there is more power in the consoles. In lamens terms (for quazimodo (:)) consoles can take more and give gamers a more enlightening experience. People might say that it is the graphics but I think they are being too prejudice and don’t really know that they are enjoying the depth and not graphics.
While you are playing an amazing game for instance…shenmue, some people might think that the graphics make the game extra special and in all respects it might do but the depth makes it all the enhanced. While going around stunning graphics you also encounter something never seen before, well you have it is just more first-rate depth and twice as much as ever seen before.
Now the great new consoles are getting more advanced they can take more depth of this kind. Games will slowly, gradually have more things to them like new features or different things to keep you going or coming back. I think that graphics and depth are a massively great combo and games like Red Faction, final fantasy games; shenmue and GT2 are all great examples of these killer combos.
Red Faction- a great shooting game where you use skill and blow holes through walls. A new experience for the gamer, and a definite original and fun title.
Final Fantasy- This series of games are fun, long and are soo detailed. You keep coming back for more and not many people do not like this.
GT2- a brilliant racer like no other. You have the stylish experience of racing flash cars as well as spending many hours getting licenses.
Shenmue- a Sega genius and in my opinion one of the most realistic and complex games of all time. But still fun!
As we are seeing new games like this all the time it could be an all-new turn for the better and a kind of revolution. Each genre is seeing a brilliant game creeping along every once in a while. I know many more will come for instance, GT3 or metal gear solid 2 will both be major break through’s in Sony’s campaign with it’s Ps2.
I think most games that get about 2/10 (exhibition of speed, ODM issue no. 21) are the ones from companies that haven’t had as much experience at gaming and are still learning the process of pleasing the gamer with games that just keep you bouncing back. With more companies making games all the time it looks like there will be some more flops in the future but be prepared for them.
So next time you play one of those stunning games in your collection, remember that it has great depth and graphics if it is that good. I suggest you read magazines or surf the web to see which games can involve you most and give out great depth.
Cheers

Everywhere you go there is something new to discover (Skies of Arcadia, collected all your crew members and made all the discoveries, anyone?)
There is always a great variety of gameplay (Final Fantasy, how about a relaxing game of cards with an NPC or taking time out to play in the arcades anyone?)
You never know what is going to await you (Unreal Tournament - Deathmatch on a public server online, anyone?)
Just scratching on the surface those are essentially linear storylines or racers or shooters, but dig a little deeper into the game, and give it a bit more time, and you discover wondrous treasures awaiting. Well, ok, not wondrous treasures, but more depth anyway.
A game that involves dropping bombs, to blow up enemies.
This game was refreshingly simply when first available, yet highly addictive. The multiplayer was great. It was frantic, fast paced, and most of all fun.
I'd hardly say the game had depth though.
I once (okay, more than once) played Holy Magic Century on the N64. A game that took you on a quest to find a magical somethingorother and defeat whatsisname. I thought that this game was so shallow though. It was far too linear, and I just couldn't get into it. Even though it was a big game, it had no depth.
So what gives a game depth?
