Are Rare actually a part of Nintendo? It's just that everything they touch turns to gold and they would have garunteed success on other platforms, but all their games are on Nintendo consoles. It's the one thing I really regret about my PS2 - no Rare games, so i was wondering if there ever will be.

Rare areb't exactly a part of Nintendo, but they have specially dedicated themselves to producing games and the like for Nintendo.

Rareware are owned by Nintendo. They made the right choice in that. Think of all the great games that Rare have released since the release of the Nes, maybe even since they worked on the Spectrum under the name Ultimate. There is just too many great games to name although some of the best have been:

Perfect Dark/Goldeneye
Donkey Kong Country (1,2 and 3)
Snake Rattle and Roll
CBFD

There are many, many more but I am not going to bore you with a list. All of these games have been a real boost to all of the Nintendo systems.

Free Radical Design made Timesplitters. Makes you think doesn't it that with just a few employees from Rare a game can make it big. All I can say is I am glad neither of the Stamper brothers left. It would have been a great loss to the company.

Microsoft do that as well, you know. So do Sony, to an extent I suppose. Sony only bought Psygnosis out of kindness though. The company was going under and they needed help.

The deal with Nintendo has been around since just after Donkey Kong Country was produced.

Nintendo showed Rare their new console, the N64, and asked if Rare wanted to develop for it.

Rare said yes, so Nintendo supplied them with all of the development kit, and all of the technical know-how, in exchange for a large share in their company, which lead to exclusivity.

Basically if a development team are working on something that Nintendo really like, they try to buy them to make it an exclusive.

Nintendo were particularly impressed with the work Silicon Knights were doing on Eternal Darkness, that they bought half of the company.

Hey Dan.

Well, half was an exaggeration. I have no idea how many, but I think it was quite a few.

They also release the odd PC title ... (Hostile Waters was their last release I think?)

Half of Rare went to make Free Radicals?

It was only half the Goldeneye team (i.e. one or 2 people)

:-D

I've returned to continually annoy TB again :-D

Soz. I admit I'm not a Rare expert but I was told that Rare are owned by Nintendo but they are allowed to keep their own name.

umm... Rare are not owned by Nintendo, they are a developing division of Nintendo and are therfore not actually owned by Nintendo...

Also, most of the guys that left to work on TS after Goldeneye are now wanting to work for Rare again, although apparently not being allowed because they gave away 'rare' developing tricks before....
