The monkeys on the end Customer Services phone line at the XBox wouldn't tell me if DVD-RWs could be played or not. The dude just kept repeating 'copied disks cannot be played'

Yes DVD-RW's do work in the Xbox dvd-rom.

If your disk drive has 2 holes in then they will play.
