Okehazama, 22 JUNE 1560
Between 1457 and 1615 Japan was at war. They where not at war with another country but with each other, it was known as the period of "Sengoku Jidai" roughly translated meaning "The Age of the Country at War"
Many clans owned only small pieces of Japan but it was the desire of every Daimyo (Clan Warlord) to become the Shogun (Leader of Japan) and unite Japan under their rule. To achieve this, the Daimyo had to take over Kyoto, seize the emperor and then install themselves as Shogun. This was not an easy task but in June 1560 one Daimyo was strong enough to attempt such a feat. His name was Imagawa Yoshimoto.
Imagawa had assembled an army that was 25,000 men strong and had then proceeded to march towards the capital via the Tokaido*1. The route to the capital passed through the territory that belonged to the Oda clan. Many years of conflict made the Oda and Imagawa bitter enemies. Imagawa then decided that, to ensure his victory, he would defeat the Oda clan before marching onto the capital.
*1 A historic road that was 303 miles long which ran mostly along the Pacific coast of the island of Honshu and connected Kyto with Edo (now Tokyo) in Japan.
As Imagawa's army marched into Owari (Oda territory), Scouts informed Nobunaga of the enemy's position. Oda, although quite a strong warlord could not hope to defeat an army consisting of 23,000 men head on in a field battle. The only chance Oda had was to launch a surprise attack against the Imagawa at the most benifical time for him. Nobunaga then left his capital with only 200 men. On his way, he recruited more of his soldiers and soon his forces numbered somewhere within 3,000 men.
Imagawa's forces had began their conquest of the Oda clan by attacking the border forts of Marune and Washizu. Imagawa was so sure that he would be victories over the Oda clan that he stopped his advance at Dengakuhazama to celebrate, even though scouts had informed Yoshimoto that Oda had assembled an army and was on the move. Yoshimoto disregarded the information thinking that nothing could stop him. Oda's army was moving closer and closer to the Imagawa. Nobunaga knew the layout of the land and used this advantage to mask his approach.
Oda's small forces approached the Imagawa camp. It was a hot and humid afternoon but Nobunaga was surprised to find that no sentries were on duty and that the vast majority of Imagawa's troops where drunk. A great thunderstorm began to assemble overhead which Nobunaga used to cover his final move. With the Imagawa soldiers running for cover of the trees, Nobunaga gave the final order to charge.
The Imagawa were totally unprepared for the attack and were caught completely by surprise. Many of the soldiers were killed before they could even get to their weapons and many others passed out from too much drink who were then slaughtered in their sleep. Imagawa had heard the commotion but he thought a drunken brawl had broken out between his men and ignored it. However this thought was shattered when a Samurai burst into his maku, Imagawa thinking this was one of his own men ordered him to return to his post but the Samuri responded by trying to stick a spear throw Imagawa's chest. Imagawa parried the spear with his sword but was unable to defend himself when two more Samurai came into the maku. One grabbed and held down Imagawa and the other cut off his head. All 23,000 men where killed and the only survivors where two senior retainers.
The battle between Imagawa's army of 23,000 and Oda's army of 3,000 was won in roughly 15 minutes. After this impressive victory many of Imagawa's retainers joined Nobunaga.
With the help of this victory Nobunga increased in power and in the passing years took Kyoto and systematically killed many of his rivals one after the other. Nobunaga became one of the most powerful Daimyo in the whole of Japan.

This was put together from a few sources that can be found on the net. It shows how much research Capcom actually did into the game, especially with the opening sequence. It was raining after all!

P.S.
In the game Samanosuke should he served no one. This would make him a "Ronin" meaning a "Wave men" - Samurai without a lord.
> I do have the Bishamon Sword though - does that increase my odds?
Oddly enough Fortinbras is quite easy to beat even without the Bishamon Sword. The boss before him, Marcellus is the hardest boss. What i did was went though all three of the swords special moves, you know the lightning combo, fireball, tornado etc and then just moved to the back of the room (closest to you) and just used all my arrows and all off my musket bullets. You can blocks his punches, the fire breath is easy to dodge, the little ball's of red lightning are easy to dodge and his laser eye thingy is easy to dodge as well. They don't even do that much damage if the connect. Plus lots a herbs and medicine (just in case) and your on your way to victory. With the Bishamon sword i just did the same except i didn't use the arrows/musket and just switched straight to the sword.
The final video sequence is very good and rivals the opening sequence, very messy!
I heard that the game cost roughly $10 million dollars to make. It was originally going o be released for the N64, then they scrapped that idea and decided to release it for the PS1 and again that idea was scrapped. They finally released it on the PS2. About 50-70 people where working on it for about 3-4 years. Don't quote me on this, just heard it somewhere.

Yes, my thumbs are very opposable - always arguing and fighting over which one gets to whack the spacebar on my keyboard...
Step right up and place your bets!
This match is a Pay Per View exclusive coming live from La Maison de Wookiee Monster tonight!
Ringside seats are sold out, but we'll have all the action for you right here on the Meka_Dragon Sports Network, just £49.95 for tonights fantastic bout.....
The opening CGI movie to Onimusha is awesome; I can't remember the cost, but apparently it's the most expensive CGI intro ever used in a game.
And what a game it is! I've reached the final boss, Fortinbras, and should be chopping him to sushi tonight!
