Originally I guess it was Nintendo, sega and atari who got the idea of playing games at home on consoles rolling. Nowadays we see sony as one of the big guns in the industry and soon microsoft plan to release the X-box to compete on the market. Sega recently stopped making consoles and decided to concentrate more on games. So in the future do you think any other big companies will plan on trying its luck with the games and console market? Who would do best?
Maybe its time we see another British company try.

Maybe there will be a single console spec. one day, like with pcs. Then we could build our own consoles + buy from many companies.
God forbid this should ever happen!!!

I know that nintendo, sega weren't the first but they made gaming more popular for people.

Another British company that does well is Havok, they design the gaming engine used in the PS2 and X-box, i think they started in Ireland.

Actually, it was a company called Magnavox in 1972, and the machine was called Odyssey.

Perhaps your right. The only British company I know in Britain is Rareware. Check out their website:

There are no real technical companies left in the UK with any sort of financial backing to launch a console. If it wasn't for Pokemon, Nintendo would be in no place to compete with Sony or Microsoft either. It is at times like these where the cries for a single format console are heard the loudest, although the industry would be a far less interesting place, could you imagine how the scene would look now had Nintendo not been so stupid as to kick Sony out the door? You would have an industry with a Nintendo/Sony console. Sega would have still went to the wall, and Microsoft wouldn't be so stupid to think that there is room in a single format market to stage any sort of competition. So what would we be left with? Companies scrambling over each other to produce the best games, as this is what would sell the most.

We would have Sony, Nintendo, Sega, Microsoft, Square, Konami, Capcom, Namco etc. all fighting over each other to release the next big thing, and no one would feel left out. Nintendo would still be able to corner the market they aim for. Sony would still be able to corner the market they aim for. Sega could continue to bring classic arcade gaming to the home, and everyone would be able to buy exactly what they want.

I think I'll stick with the console wars.
