Yes, that's right the Play Station 3. I've just seen a report on the Game Network (channel 223 for all those digital viewers) in one of those short news flashes they have now and again.
Anyway the report. They claim that IBM will be making the processor for the PS3 and that is will be a very small sized processor (they did say the size but i didn't catch it all). It is also said that the processor will be more powerful than "Deep Blue" (that's the big computer that beat the chess champion of the world) and the release date for the PS3.....2004 which doesn't seem that long to me. I'm not sure whether this news is official or unofficial so if you've heard different say so. What does everybody else think?

P.S.
Onimusha 2 is now 30% complete and is set for a release in Japan in March the 4th 2002. Can't wait!!!

We haven't even began to see what the PS2 is capable of. Sony are currently working ona development tool which can tell developers where there is bottlenecks developing in their games, and how to get more performance, or to improve the graphics without hitting performane. This was developed for the Playstation about 2 years after launch and that's when we began to see a marked improvement in games.

I think that this is a clever marketing ploy from Sony, over the Gamecube and Xbox. When the Gamecube and Xbox are released, basically, what you see is what you get. But with the PS2, it will be improving right throughout it's lifespan and may eventually succeed the Gamecube and Xbox in technical lovliness. What may effect the Playstation 2, is if the Gamecube or Xbox get a decent launch. If companies see easier money to be made on these systems, rather than plugging away at the PS2, it will go down. But if it continues on it's current path and remeains the biggest platform out of the major three, the developments will continue and we will be treated to some absolutly superb cinematic gaming experiences. Just asa long as we keep the content of the games, rather than watching CG movies.

The true power of the PS2 probably wont be seen for a few years. Remember the PS1 with games like destruction derby to begin with. A while later titles like GT1 and GT2, the graphics had improved quite a lot. Same should happen with the PS2.

You cant upgrade a console by fitting another HDD in it as the hardware is set and could only be changed if Sony came to your house and fitted a new part.

I still think that Sony wont risk releasing the PS3 for ages. The PS2 is still very new and programmers still need to get to grips with how to program it successfully. There are still features that programmers still havent tapped into yet. I think that PS2 will still be able to hold its own against the GC and X-Box.

wernt sony going to release updates of hard drives for the ps2 so it never gets old.
it will just be stupid to have it come out in the next few years many people havent got one yet, and those who have are still getting to grips with it.

Sony and Toshiba re working on 0.1 and 0.07 micron processor fabrication. The "cell" prcessor being thrown around will be fabricated at 0.1micron. If you don't believe me then

IBM and toshiba are working together on "the cell" and it will be used for other sony producdts not just the PS3, around $400 million will be spent to develop it. The whole idea of the PS3 being released within 2-3 years is just a rumour, it won't be around in Japan until at least 2006. Sony stated that "the cell" will take around 4-5 years to go from design to mass production.

Sony are clever, why rush the PS3? It wouldn't make sense, the only way they would is if microsoft released an X-Box2 or nintendo released a GC2. Considering that the GC or X-Box isn't out yet it looks unlikely that they would release another one within 2-3 years. I think sony will wait until 2006, this way they will have time to develop the hardware and produce enough for the high demand, this will enable them to get the most out of the PS2 and let 1st and 3rd party developers have enough time to develop some great titles for the release of the PS3.

most consoles have a life of around 5-6 years before a succesor comes along, so don't worry about the PS2 just being short term, it wouldn't be worth it for sony to release the PS3 before around 2005. The cell wouldn't be ready for mass production anyway.

I found this info on another webpage, i found it a little hard to believe at first but it isn't going to be out for around 4 years so who knows what they could do by then.

0.1 micron process! Hahahaha! Don't make me laugh!

The latest AMD chip uses 0.18 micron technology, thats been around for a couple years. It'll take ages to get down to 0.1, if they ever do!

IBM will be making the ps3's processor which at this stage is being named "the cell". Sony have stated they want the PS3 to be 1000 times more powerful than the PS2, and if it is then it will be some machine. Some say the PS3 could be around in as little as 3 years ( a little unfair for Ps2 Owners)
But will the use the Emotion engine 2 or the emotion engine 3. Emotion Engine 2 is penciled in to appear in 2002 and will contain some 50 million transistors. Emotion Engine 3 will sport half a billion transistors shoehorned onto the die by a 0.1 micron process. So I think sony should wait to use 3.
Also will the games be DVD based? Im not sure, IBM are also involved with making holographic memory which hold alot more than a DVD. So maybe sony will wait and make the best use of this new technology.

Ive heard from somewhere else that IBM are doing the chip for PS3, but I can't remember where.

But I would have thought it would be later than 2004, Sony's track record has been make a machine and stick with it, not release another when the hardware develops, but then it might need the power if the online gaming goes the way they are thinking...

I hazard a guess, but I recon the PS3 would play PS2 and PS games, seeing as it was such a great selling point.
