I'm not a big tennis fan, but Wimbledon usually catches my attention as the tournament draws to a close. This year it was quite different though, I was watching it from the start, and really into it.
I'm not sure why, maybe it was the media attention that it got, with many ex-players critising Wimbledon as getting boring, or all of the fuss about the lack of British players.
Mind you, the tennis this year was of a really high quality, and there were plenty of surprises along the way.
Martina Hingis, female No.1 lost in the first round. Pete Sampras, winner for the last 5 years or so was knocked out by a 19 year old!
Then there was the usually story of the Brit.Only Greg Rusedski and Tim Henman made it past the second round, and Greg didn't get far into the second week, but Henman certainly had us thinking that there would be a Brit in the final for the first time in over 60 years!
But typical of wimbledon, the skies opened up and rained on Tims parade. He was two sets to one up, having won the thirs set 6-0, and was flying. It was two days later when he finally lost the match. Who knows what would have happened if it wasn't for that, but Goran Ivenisevic deserves a lot of credit for coming through that match1
The womans final held no real surprises. Venus Williams showing her strength to walk away with a second consecutive championship.
The mens final, however, was something truely special. Goran Ivanisevic, a three time loser in Wimbledon finals, not having won a match in a major tournament for over a year, and having slipped way down the rankings took on last years beaten finalist Pat Rafter.
They shared the first four sets, and were holding serve right up until 7-7. With some superb returns of serve Goran Ivanisevic broke Rafters serve to take an 8-7 lead. He had to win his service game to win the match and the championship.
As I've already said this was his fourth Wimbledon final, and it came as no surprise to me that it was also on his fourth championship point that he won the game.
It was so great to see him win, but my heart went out to Pat Rafter. Hopefully he'll return another year, just like Ivanisevic did, and one day claim the title.
It was certainly a great sporting event. All of the talk about changes needing to be made to Wimbledon should now go out of the window. It was great fun! Roll on next year!
The drama of Tim Henman's three day match just added to all the tension. Ivanisevic is a great character and no-one can begrudge his win after so many near misses. Rafter was unlucky (again) but deserves great credit for the part he played in that epic final (not to mention the win over Agassi).
We all wanted Tim to get through but it has to be remembered that he was on the verge of defeat against Todd Martin - only for bad light to stop play for the day. He had his luck in that match and it run out in the semi final.
Tim Henman is gradually edging closer to the final with each passing year. Perhaps next year he will make it.
I really felt for Pat Rafter. When he was getting interviewed by Sue Barker, he was so close to tears at the end.
