Foggy, whos that? Never heard of him? Don't worry, unfortunately you are not alone in fact the majority of the people in England will not know who Carl Fogarty actually is. So why do I think this 'nobody' is the greatest British Sports star of recent times? Maybe it could be his record breaking 4 times world champion of his sport. Yes 4 times. Impressive isn't it.

Carl Fogarty is argueably the greatest person in his sport ever and the reason that you probably don't know who he is is the atrociously small amount of coverage that his sport, motorcycle racing gets on TV. For those of you who already knew who Carl Fogarty is I apologise for the long winded introduction.

I and many others think that it is an absolute travesty that World Superbikes and Foggy in particular have recieved such terrible national coverage, after all which other British sportsman has acheived the things that Foggy has and has been World champion 4 times. The only person I can think of that could rival Foggy for the best sporting acheivements over the past few years is the venerable Steve Redgrave.

The main reason why Foggy is not recognised outside biking circles is that this sport is not televised enough although I have to say that just recently the BBC have been doing a fairly good job of turning this around. The fact remains that motorbike racing is one of the most adrenaline pumping sports ever and is really exciting to watch. So if it is really that good to watch why does Formula 1 racing get so much more coverage? This amazes me as F1 has noticeably become incredably boring in recent years due to strigent safety rules. Sure, F1 has its merits but is it as exciting as watching a rider disappear under another at 90mph on the inside of a corner whilst leaning the bike over at an angle that would make Isaac Newton turn in his grave? Thought not.

So why are other sports such as snooker, cricket and rugby getting so much much terrestrial TV coverage when this exhilarating sport remains largely untapped. One of lifes great mysteries I guess.

Right back to Carl Fogarty in particular. This man is undoubtably a biking great and although now retired through injury (one of many) was snubbed repeatably throughout his career by the media outside the biking world.

This culminated in his being invited to "Sports personality of the year" only to be snubbed again with a 3 minute slot, obviously because 7 world titles in various areas of motorbike racing aren't good enough for the BBC! They would rather have the Norfolk champion of tiddely-winks clutching the personality of the year award instead of a true sporting great like Foggy. Also anyone who's heard of Carl Fogarty will know that it is not his lack of personality. Foggy is a great hero for kids to idolise if they are to learn sheer determination and self belief...just by looking at his eyes when he is racing you can visably see the will to win that drove him over many setbacks to beacome World champion.

So you may still not be convinced that this Carl Fogarty is truly a sporting great. Well which other British Sportsman or woman has had 120,000 all supporting him at one single event. Nobody? I guess not. Just being there at Brands Hatch at this time showed me the incredible respect that this man justifiably deserves. Forget Old Trafford, the Nou Camp or an Olympic stadium because believe me no sporting event will ever come close to the atmosphere at Brands that day and this terrific atmosphere was all due to Carl Fogarty's presence.

Another reason that I am angry at the lack of coverage Foggy has recieved over his illustrious career is that every time he raced his neck would be on the line. No not some sponsorship deal that may fall through if he did not win but the very real threat of death that comes with every race.

Hopefully due to reading this review you will now know who Foggy is and realise just what a travesty it is that a sporting great like this could be so shunned outside his sport.

Damn

I'll take it you meant Max Biaggi. Foggy was ace but he's not the only one. I think Chili was good too.

Ha, don't make me laugh.

Nobody past or present could ever have rivalled Foggy at his peak.

I am not really into World Superbikes but it is good to see someone like Carl Fogarty get a mention as he is a great Sportsman.

Right on!
Has anybody read his book? Amazing story. Did you see him at Goodwood? What a dude.
Probably the last British sporting hero 4 times over and a decent down to earth bloke too unlike other alleged brit sporting heros who get paid millions.....

Nice post jd - interesting arguement. Superbike racing is probably more interesting than most grand prix races (F1).

Good topic, Manx TT on the saturn = WHAT A GAME>
