Sorry having one of those "AAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHH" moments. My girlfriend is here and she's using my computer and so I'm having to use my brothers computer (for 2 months) which is a cheap package computer, £300 I think it was.

This problem happened previously before (last week I think), when the computer is off and I try and turn it on it'll just power up the monitor saying it's done a test and I should check the cables. The last time I had this problem I just kept trying and somehow it came on. Then I moved the computer into my office. I think I had the problem again but I soon got it on and it was working. Today we had some guy coming to fix the shower and of course he cuts the power when I hadnt finished turning off the computer so when I try to get it back on. Nothing happens, monitor comes on. After lots of frustration and opening up the machine I managed to get it to work again. By that I mean I saw the CPU fan start up and the machine powers up. But no sooner had it opened up onto desktop within seconds it just cut the power again. I tried it again, several failed attempts then I got it going but then it died again.

:S So yeah what happened? Any chance I can fix it?

Okay I was writing a reply on the machine as last night I managed to get it going for about 10 minutes before it decided to turn itself off and mid reply it went again. How annoying.

Yes I think it's either one, might be the motherboard though, which makes me think that I should just give up on the machine and let to gather dust. I would have to buy the same components if I wanted to get it to work again. I've never liked store bought PCs.

Thanks again for the help Garin :)

Online diagnosis is always a bit hit and miss but those kind of symptoms would suggest some sort of power problem I think? So the obvious candidate is the PSU which is cutting out for whatever reason (PSUs are usually the poorest components in cheap PCs). The other possibility is the motherboard which is responsible for telling everything to power up anyway.
Either way, seems to be hardware related so fixing it isnt really an option. All you can do is identify the dodgy component and try to replace it.
