I need to run a 10m cable from my phone extension socket to my modem, should I use just a telephone extension cable or a Cat5e (I think) cable, or does it make no difference?

It is running from a extension box fitted by sky for the skybox. I do not use it for sky just the modem.

I know you said you use a modem but is it really a router (with network ports) or a USB modem? If it's a router then the best thing is always to have it as close to the master socket as possible with a short RJ11 (modem) cable connecting it to the socket and then laying CAT5 from the router to you computer.
If you are using a USB modem then it's probably better to run CAT5 to the modem instead of using a telephone extension cable as these very in quality and some don't use 'twisted pairs', which help reduce interference. CAT5 is made up of 4 twisted pair and is good for single runs of up to 100m. The most common CAT5 is unshield (UTP). If you are only running it a short distance (a couple of metres or so) then you can use stranded cable otherwise use solid core cable.
