I was told that sony cancelled the US/UK pocketstation because they didn't think there would be enough demand for it on what is now a pretty old console.

At the time, I believe they mentioned that a PDA for the PS2 was being considered. I'd say it's likely that this will be launched eventually, maybe along with the modem/hard drive.

See Ya

"Pocketstation is a memory card and a portable video game system in one, it was released in Japan a couple of years back at around £20, and looks VERY similar to the Dreamcasts Visual Memory Unit. With the Pocketstation you can play games, save Playstation games, link with your friends via infrared, download data from your Playstation game to play a mini version of that game on the move, and upload your results back to the Playstation game. Loads of games were made compatible with it, including Final Fantasy VIII. 24 months or so ago, Sony announced that the Pocket Station would not be available in the US or Europe due to 'manufacturing problems'. However, it IS available on import for around £40 plus p&p, and if you shop around you'll be able to get hold of one for the PSX much cheaper than this.

As for Microsoft, rumors about an X-Box handheld have been circulating since around October last year, and people have been pulling specs out of thin air ever since. One idea is that their hand held, because of Microsofts PDA experience with Windows CE OS, will be both a PDA and games hand held but more games orientated than normal PDA's.

Look around on the web, and you'll see specs for it like:

CPU: 200 MHz Strong Arm
Memory 16MB
Graphics ATi Rage Mobility
Sound 16 bit stereo with MIDI/MP3 support
Storage MiniDisc
Communication 115Kbps Serial Port, Expansion Port
Operating System Windows CE and DirectX
Resolution 320x200x16bit

and so forth. You'll also see prices quoted at the $299 mark, which indicates that this is not a VMU like the Dreamcast's or a Pocket Station like Sony's, but a full blown competitive hand held that fully pushes open the technological boundaries that Nintendo have only been nudging over the past few years with the Gameboy and GBA.

It's all rumours with the X-Box hand held though, nothing is concrete until Microsoft actually put one on the shop shelf.

Both Sony and MS have said that they are currently developing their own hand-helds...

MS has divulged more details than Sony... so if you poke around the web, you'll probably find more info on the X-Boy (??? I dunno :) ( than Sonys baby PS... ???
