Well when the Playstation 2 was released it's game titles weren't what was expected, and the PS2 could do a lot more. All that was released were sequels (well mainly) this cost the Sony a lot of publicity and buyers, that Sony needed.
"Sony's dream console could supposedly have better games than ever thought", but there was no proof to back this statement up.
Well, until a couple of months later, that is. This is when a game known as Zone Of the Enders (more simply ZOE) was released, this was a promising title, although rather short, it showed what the PS2 was capabble of. However this did not rake in more buyers, if there was only going to be one great title released every blue moon, than what would be the point of buying this console???
Then you were made to wait again, you had completed ZOE nth times, got bored of the endles battles of tekken tag and the mindless killing of Timesplitters, everything started getting tedious. Then June came and the games started rolling in. for example Red Faction was released, and this game brings a whole new dimension to next Geberation gaming; it is the first shoot 'em up where the scenery is completely destructable.
And the there is Onimusha, does this game look good or what. A game like no other, it looks like Reident evil (it is actually a loy different to it) and plays like a dream. These are the greatest two titles released, and then there is the bouncer, this is a game that has not lived up to it's hype, it takes two hours to complete half of which is cut scenes, which is a let down.
Now we must wait once again, because come winter all the is dreamt about is coming, titles like MGS2 and the new Bond game (i'm not sure if it has bond in it anymore)and Final Fantasy X. What a time to release the best, it is the same time as the release of the long awaited GameCube, and with PS2 having theses titles, will Nintem=ndo lose it's lime light???
This seems like a well thought out plan for Sony, and as Meka said they are smart. The Gamecube soon to come and the PS" soon to get bigger. What do you think?? Will Nintendo succeed?? Or will it be Sony?? Well what ever the answer is, it will be us deciding the answer.
To the future and to the present :-D

AH yes... didn't think of that! Good point.
However, to be honest do you think that Sony would wait this long to release there killer apps? (crowds say "yes"). To be frank, you'd have thought that Sony would release one or two killer titles by now?

If they publish the game, they decide on when the game is released. As Sony publish alot of it's releases then it decides alot of it's releases, release dates.
1) Sony do not make games! Or decide release dates for that matter- that's the role of the developers and publishers
2) The reason the first batch of PS2 games was poor was NOT because people were holding games back. After all, had there been a great launch title it'd generate loads of money! Indeed, the reason for the lack of great launch titles was the fact that Sony had given PS2 developers poor dev kits that were not well documented. Also, there was also the notion of "playing it safe". For example, Namco released ANOTHER(!) Tekken game rather than make something new!
3) The reason that good games are now coming out is that there is more documentation for the dev kits. Also, Sony initially gave out dev kits too late for great games to make the PS2's release- instead we are seeing those games emerge now!
Finally, there is definately one point you make that most people over-esimate. Many publishers hold back killer games till hot buying periods like Xmas. There will have been a few titles held till after the PS2's release so that they could be targetted at a larger audience and not just the pre-ordered console buyers.
Sonic
You forgot Rumble Racing and GT3 though.
