Is the PS2 losing its focus?

With the introduction of Internet capabilities, Hard Disk Drive, keyboard and mouse; Sony clearly show where they see the future of the PS2 going: away from gaming and into multimedia entertainment. But now, Sony will be launching a monitor for easy internet use. Is this what gamers want to see? Their PS2, undoubtedly a fine gaming machine, placed on a desk next to a monitor?? I’m sorry, but the way I think the PS2 should be is standing right next to a nice TV, in front of a comfy sofa with some mates.
Yes, I think online gaming is the future, and I can’t wait to be able to download extra levels for my games, and play some quality online RPG’s, First-person shooters and TONY HAWK’S 3!! online- the satisfaction of kicking ass against some overconfident Johnny Foreigners certainly appeals to me!! But, keyboards, mice and monitors do not belong. The PS2 should be in the lounge not the study, and with the gaming-orientated X-Box and especially Gamecube- will game developers not start to look towards the Gamecube and X-Box knowing that the only owners of these consoles are going to be gamers?
No doubt most PS2 owners will be buying the Network adapter- I know I will, but I hope Sony realise that us gamers want the console for games, and the internet connection for online games. They should be looking at ways of improving the games capability of the machine, and not trying so hard to branch out in other areas of home entertainment and multimedia.
Most people that want to surf the net, write letters and do spreadsheets already have a PC for doing this, and the partnership of Sony with AOL will not prove that popular with those with internet capabilities already unless the connection cost is kept low. Please Sony don’t put writing and spreadsheet packages on the PS2.
The day I see a PS2 on a desk next to a monitor, with the user hardly interested in gaming, is the day I may have to look closely at my allegiances to Sony, and…look at…whisper it…Microsoft ?? How the gaming world has changed.

Do you agree with me? I’m interested to hear any comments people may have on the subject.

Maybe they are just offering options...

They dont know excatly what will and wont sell, so they are making a variety of optional extras, for those who want it...

Those that proove popular may be adopted in future games releases (e.g higher res options for monitor users?)...

Others will be dropped and left to nostager freaks?

Nothing wrong with giving options though huh?

It will never be a PC.

Every time someone mentions this Chris Deering just says "It's a PlayStation, not a WorkStation".

Well said, I think.

I've heard Sony's plans are to turn the PS2 into a PC but i STRONGLY erge them to just keep it as a games console with the ability of a pc.

The reason why they're releasing a monitor for using the Internet is a very simple one.

Most monitors run at 800x600, that's 800 pixels across and 600 down. You can only use 796 across at best, but it's safe to stick with around 760. TVs however, are only 544x372, which means you've got about 540 at best, and 510 to be safe. Any more across, and you'd get horizontal scrolling, which is a Very Bad Thing™. Therefore, in order to stop almost every site on the net from being like this (including this one) you've got to have a higher resolution.

That's where the monitor comes in.
