Here's my little diary of events from yesterday.
Got to the field in oxford relatively early, and took a deceptively 20 min sign posted walk from the car park. We got there early, around 12pm I think, quite a lot of people there it seemed. When we were actually inside the field, it was massive. Little did I know that this would be full of about 70 thousand people at the climax of the event. We ran down to the front next to the stage and were the last to get into the front section. From here we were given wrist bands and were some of the lucky few to gain access here all day. Success!
The first two local bands were alright, hints of potential and distorted melodies. Then came Humphrey Littleton's jazz band for 1/2 hour. It was awe inspiring being in the presence of such a legendary group.
Pure wonderfulness.
Next came Sigour Ros which were alright, but it seems that live, each song sound exactly the same. Shame.
Sugergrass took the stage next and rocked out for an hour. First glimpses of a mosh pit came through here.
Beck's acoustic set was great. That's al I need to say!
Then came Radiohead at 8:30.
I was knackered, but was not going to miss this for the world. My brother, friend and I fought our way as near to the front as possible, about 6 people from the barrier. Perfect view.
They came out rather shyishly in a Radiohead manner, and began with National Anthem.
Amazing.
The atmosphere was undescribable, the mosh pit intense.
Next came Lucky and the light show was phenomenal.
They played through so many songs in the 2 hour set, with the likes of Iron Lung, No surprises, You and whose Army, Morning Bell etc.
One of the highlights for me was exit music. As soon as the song hit the chorus the heavens opened and the rain came down. It was absolutley wonderful. It continued to pour for the rest of the concert and I was surprised to see them play Talk Show Host. Fantasticlly beautiful song that it is.
The biggest surprise came for the last song. Motion Picture Soundtrack was supposed to be played but Thom's keyboard broke or something. There was a minor period of confusion, but to popular demand on came....
Creep!
Wow, I never would have guessed they would play that ever again, but it was so amazing. So intense, so much atmosphere.
Every bit and more worth the money.
Getting out was hard, but drenched, we made our way to the van and changed into dry clothes and began the drive home. From Oxford to Pembrokeshire, in the corner of wales.
We got home at 6am, absolutley exhausted but each of us convinced we had seen something truly great.
I believe it may be one of those times where someone like your uncle says, 'I have seen Jimi Hendric play live'. So now I shall be able to say that I have seen Radiohead live... erm again!
Anyone else see this magnificent concert?
I NEED to see Radiohead live... hopefully in Britain, though.
