Its typical, that just when you thought that your Playstation had nothing new left in it along comes a game like DinoCrisis2. Not content with their original formula Capcom have completely made over the game, gone are the ugly and slow 3D environments of the original game. In it’s place is the beautiful game engine that was used to create Resident Evil 3 Nemesis, this makes a big difference to the game. The graphics are among the best I’ve seen on a Playstation, and the control system is more responsive. The style of the game has also been changed, whereas the original game was primarily a puzzle game with a minor action component the sequel is an all action shoot em up.

DinoCrisis2 is set a year after the original game, unfortunately the research into the mysterious third energy has continued and your left to clean up the mess. The first thing you’ll notice when you start the game is the gorgeous FMV introduction, which is one of the best I’ve ever seen on the Playstation.
You start your adventure deep in an ancient jungle that is teeming with Dinosaurs. During the game you get to control two characters Regina from the original DinoCrisis, and a new character Dylan. Initially Dylan is armed with only a Shotgun (mainweapon) and a Machete (subweapon), with Regina being armed with a Handgun (mainweapon) and a Stungun (subweapon). Using your weapons to wipe out Dinosaurs will build up your extinction points, more points are gained for combos (killing more than one Dinosaur at a time) and counter attacks. Luckily though as the game progresses you’ll be given the opportunity to buy new weapons, ammunition and first aid at save points (where you can also save your progress). Thankfully you don’t need to pick up ribbons like with the Resident Evil games to save your game, this helps to keep the game flowing. As you gain more points along your journey more weapons will become available to you, these will be needed to defeat the bigger harder Dinosaurs. My personal favourite weapon is the Flamelauncher as its excellent for racking up the points, however there are 15 weapons in all that can be obtained from the Solid Cannon which shoots out giant jolt of electricity to the powerful Antitank Rifle.

Actually I lied, there are even more weapons although these can only be used during the numerous sub games. These sub games include a whole underwater level (diving suit and torpedo’s included free of charge), a level where you get to blast the dinosaurs out of the water using your boats on board laser gun, a level where you get to take control of a Tank and blast away a T-Rex and a Level where you get to keep the Tyrannosaurus’ at bay using the machine gun on the back of a military jeep.

All in all this game has a lot to offer, far too much to list here it’s got more weapons and more Dinosaurs than the first game and is engrossing from start to finish. For those of you who manage to defeat the seemingly unstoppable Giganotosaurus and finish the game, another surprise waits in the form of a bonus game called Dinosaur Colosseum.

Be warned though once you start playing this game you wont stop playing it until you’ve finished it, its that good.
