SR have just lost a few bob from me. I was about to phone up and order L.A. Takedown on DVD for 7 quid when I realised that it was actually on TV. The reason I always wanted to see it was because Heat is my favourite film. L.A. Takedown was made before Heat by Michael Mann but he later remade it as Heat with a bigger budget, and better actors, not to mention making it twice as long. So, I sat down 2 hours and 20 minutes before it started and watched Primary Colours. I can safely say I was bored out of my mind, except for when Kathy Bates was on screen as I was desperately trying to work out who it was. It had crossed my mind that it was Kathy Bates but I wasn't sure so I kept quiet and said nothing to my brother in case I looked like a fool. The end credits came down and......Kathy Bates. DAMN! I hate it when that happens.

Anyway, then L.A. Takedown came on. I was really surprised at just how similar it was to heat. I mean, they hadn't even changed the dialogue. The guy who played Pacino's role was really good and it was obvious that Al Pacino had watched and studied L.A. Takedown before he did Heat. However, the guy who played De Niro's part was awful. He could not act at all. I thought it may just have been that he was never gonna live up to De Niro but it wasn't just that. It was that fact the he showed no emotion in his voice. Now I know that the character is supposed to be cold but not like a robot. The only thing he was good at was getting angry. Now that's quite surprising as anger is an emotion. Oh well.

All they had done in Heat was add more depth. L.A. Takedown seemed really cheap and it also seemed as if they had taken each shot only once and then moved on. However, having said that, it was still quite good and fun to watch.

Even Ralph was in it except he played Waynegrow. When they called him up to remake the film he must have been quite happy until he found out he wasn't reprising his original role but instead, having a short, one scene part.

I thought that the ending in L.A. Takedown was going to be better than in Heat because I hate the ending in Heat but I wasn't impressed much by the ending in this either. The Heat ending was actually better. There is no way that Robert De Niro could have been killed by Waynegrow. He is just too cool. He was too good and too experienced to be killed by Waynegrow. It was poor what happened to him as well. The way he fell out the window. It was like they dropped a camera out of the window. The way they had no sound as well, was also really ineffective.

The music was very similar which was definitely a good thing. Music always palys such a big part in Michael Mann's films that if it wasn't good then a lot would be taken away from the film.

I suppose, it seems as though it wasn't very good but I just want to see it again. Perhaps SR will see my money after all.

One last thing. I think that L.A. Takedown is a better name than Heat. Maybe not actually. In fact, maybe. Oh I don't know.

What did you think of it? If you watched it that is!

Dear Film enthusiast,

As a huge film fanatic myself, I did watch it...most of it anyway. I wanted to record it as I loved HEAT and Al Pacino/Robert De Niro in general, and wanted to compare the 2 movies (I want to act/Direct when I’m older).

Because I wanted the best reception as possible, I tried to record through satellite. However, After about 15 minuets I was horrified to discover Sky had gone wrong and turned itself onto Big Brother 2 (E4)! I wanted fast paced crime action, not to watch people off the street argue all day & night.

I soon reverted to BBC 2 and although I was unable to record it, I did enjoy watching what I did. Its great to know what’s going to happen and to spot the differences in the films, Like the bit where in Heat De Niro sets up Al to observe and take pictures of him. It’s like reading the book before watching a film at the cinema.

I am also a fan of Jackie Chan / Bruce Lee / Chow Yun Fat film. I love watching a great scene of superbly choreographed fighting or a car chase etc.

Some of My favourite films that I would really recommend include Heat, Leon, Crouching Tiger Hidden dragon, & countless Jackie Chan & Bruce Lee films.

I hope to be doing A Level media studies, which will enable me to make my first film and launch me into stardom. I hope to be at a screen near you in the future…

And don’t forget: “Don’t have anything in your life your not willing to walk away from in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner”.

Jeremy Knight.
