"Tear me away from the game..."

When it comes to getting new games, I've always relied on being able to buy the occasional game and trade in others towards the rest. Nowadays though, there is a severe lack of titles that I can actually bear to part with.

This seems to have happened all at once. At one point I thought nothing of trading in a bunch of games or even a whole system for the next model up. If I did that now, even with half of what I’ve got, I could get a PS2 quite easily. Problem is that I seem to have come to a point where I can’t bear to part with my games collection, as they would all be missed if I let them go.

Is this a sign that games have got better or more addictive, or simply that I’ve become more attached to them than I previously was? Well, thinking back, I did miss my old Spectrum games a lot when I sold it for an Atari ST at the time. I was amazed with the games that came with the ST, it’s true, but there were many more on the Spectrum that couldn’t be replaced as well. It’s only now that I have the Spectrum emulator on my PC that I realise exactly how much I’ve missed those games. I traded

But this highlights another problem, the cost of games has slowly risen for new consoles to a point where I can’t even think of getting the new console with more than one or two games to play on it. Where have all those bundles gone with 6 or 7 games that come with the console or computers of old? When I got my ST it came with around 25-30 games already in the pack, the Amiga had some top games and a great paint package with it. Now you are lucky to get single game packs, unless companies like Special Reserve supply their special deal packs with some extra games thrown in. This means that replacing your old collection of games to witness the new advances in technology can be an expensive and time consuming task.

Added to this, the games I currently own are not all being remade or have sequels appearing. This is the argument FOR sequels, if they are on other platforms, it means you can still play the game, hopefully an improved version at that, on your new machine. Again, this seems to have slowed down with companies choosing one console to supply their wares to and ignoring all the rest. At least before we had more of a chance that the console we chose would get a version of some of the most popular games. What about NiGHTS? Luckily, it looks as though most Sega classics are being supplied to new formats, the great Gungriffon Blaze is a nice update of the Saturn classic and the Crazy Taxi series looks to be going from strength to strength, so there may still be a chance for me to re-coup my losses if I ever decided to part with my Dreamcast in the future (note the word ‘IF’).

So, I have the choice of losing an N64 and Dreamcast. Do I give it away for a Gamecube? Do I pass it on for a PS2 or do I exchange for an X-box? Well, I can’t seem to do any of these at the moment. The games I have are just too good in my eyes to get rid of. There are so many titles I’m worried about losing that it makes it impossible to trade the old consoles in, and with discount games now appearing on these two consoles, it just seems to be getting a better and better idea at the moment to keep them.

It looks like, short of saving the money for these new consoles (many years will pass if this Is the case..) I’ll have to just be happy with what I’ve got. The future of gaming will reach me one day, but certainly not today!

I think that pd is right. Games are getting better and more addictive. I sold perfect dark for 300 francs (£ 30.00) and guess what...the money got stolen. I soooo much miss perfect dark but now my pocket money has been stopped and I cannot buy another copy. I am sooo amgry...with myself

I handled and held about 6 different GBA boxes and the GBA console box!!!!!!

Is Castlevania really THAT good. I have played all of the old games and I never really took to them. Also does it have that wicked rotating room in it.

Games, games, games. Some have sentimental value, some are just awful - so I am not surprised some people have no trouble getting rid of Tomb Raider.

Castlevania is really hurting my thumbs and I am still getting knowhere.
