Day Of Defeat: Source is nothing short of a classic, originally Day Of Defeat was a mod created by some fans of the game Half Life but after it grew in popularity it was taken on by valve software.

September 2005 saw the release of Day Of Defeat: Source, this was the all new and improved version of Day Of Defeat on the new Source engine which included far superior graphics and physics to the old version.

Not only did this new version look far better than it’s predecessor but in 2006 saw the introduction of HDR (High Dynamic Range) lighting to the engine and was put in to place in DOD:S straight away, this gave the game quite a graphical improvement over other current Source games such as Counter Strike and even Half Life 2.

The game itself is an Online FPS team game which works through the use of the Steam program, which anyone who owns Half Life 2 or a half decent PC for gaming knows is a piece games distribution and playing software.

There are two teams, the Allies and the Axis and the game is based within the Second World War. The most common map type is Capture the Flag, this involves either team trying to hold all the flag points on a map at once.

Most of the time flags can be taken by a single player but there is always at least one flag which requires two people to be next to it, the capture time to take a flag is about 1 second at the minimum and 5 seconds at the maximum. So you or you and your partner have to stand near the flag for this amount of time, it’s varies greatly for some flags depending on their position within a map.

Although you think 5 seconds isn’t really that long, on the HUD of everyone’s screen there is a indicator for each flag telling them who currently holds it, and it also indicates if that flag currently has someone trying to take it over, this means that you know people are coming for you as soon as the flag starts to change and capturing a flag isn’t enough on it’s own, it’s important that you are able to defend it from being taken over by the other team.

The other game type for maps is Detonation, in which each team has to destroy an enemy target using TNT. This often leads to frantic grenade throwing to kill the enemy soldier trying to place explosives on your objective, and stalemates are very common in this game type due to teams defending their objects so heavily rather than to committing more men to the attacking force to overwhelm their defences.

There is a choice of six classes all with their own weapons, these include Rifleman, Assault, Support, Sniper, Machine gunner and Rocket.

Most servers that are currently online will have limits to the number of players that can choose a class, although this sometimes can mean you won’t be able to play as a class you enjoy, ultimately it is to keep the game balanced so that everyone isn’t just hiding in buildings with sniper rifles or machineguns and not out capturing flags like they are meant to be.

Also it never hurts to get good with one of the classes that never has a limit placed on it, like Assault or Support as these classes are your classic soldiers, equipped with submachine guns and grenades.

The audio for the game is brilliant, 5.1 headphones or speaker set up is what I would recommend purely to get an advantage over other players that won’t be able to judge directions of sounds quite as easily also just for the atmospheric effect of hearing dirt cascade down around you after having a grenade go off to close, or the ringing and muffled sound of gun fire when your ears have been subjected to a loud explosion. Although the game is quite fast paced although you don’t actively notice these things all the time they add something extra to the game play.

This is a game where camping is important and shouldn’t be frowned upon a Sniper isn’t meant to run around firing he is meant to wait out and cover somewhere that he knows people will walk by without being noticed. If you do get this game you might come across people complaining about a camper, but really it’s not the snipers fault that someone took a route that meant they were out in the open, it’s important to learn the maps so that you can quickly take a route that will minimise the chance of getting shot from a long distance.

The maps themselves are pretty small really but they are brilliantly made so that even with 40 players in one map it’s not overly crowded, and a few of the maps are remakes of maps from the original Day Of Defeat game. You get to play various locations in war torn Europe, from ravaged French towns to a seaside village in italy, all of them show signs of war with rubble laying around on the floor and even sides of houses missing, all these give you locations to fight from and cover from enemy bullets.

This game for me personally isn’t something I will sit for hours playing in a day but it is one where I might play for around an hour every day. The best feature of the game by far is the option to play it fast paced, running around capturing flags left right and centre or to wait, hiding in the dark somewhere watching over one street for the next enemy soldier to come around the corner and pick him off with your sniper rifle.

If you have a computer capable of playing this, you should get it. It’s one of the best multiplayer FPS games currently out on the PC and really is a gaming experience that you shouldn't miss out on.
