This post links to a news report on msn.co.uk which states that the European Union acknowlodges the existence of the Echelon spy network and concedes that there is nothing which can be done to prevent it. That isn't too bad for us because we are part of it but all the other European countries can do is accept an assurance from the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand that this system is not used to carry out espionage attacks on European business contracts and hand them to one of the member countries!!
The EU may well be looking into setting up it's own system but if they do the UK will more than likely be required to contribute, allowing us access to the two most powerful spying networks in existence. At least we may be able to feel safe in the fact that we have many reluctant friends through this set up, but I think it looks also more likely that the Son of Star Wars system is to use the Echelon communications capabilities secretly between the UK and US!! Hopefully the US will extend the system to cover the UK!!
