I'll not go on about every console release as some are not worth writting about so I'll make this shorter by writting about the big named ones.
The start of the gaming industry began in America, not Japan as most people think. This was the big arcade machines that played the likes of pong and space invaders. Atari released the first console, it was the VCS machine which became popular due to space invaders. Next on the market was nintendo with its entertainment system (NES) which was extremely popular with games like donkey kong setting the way things were to be. Nintendo outsold all its competitors, its closest rival sega with its master system were way behingd the NES by the amount of units sold.
Here in the UK we had a few gos at making a console, a welsh team made the dragon 32 and dragon 64. One of my lecturers at uni wrote the BIOS for the ROM chip that was used in the dragon 32. I'll find out of him what it was like making a console and let everyone know.
Nintendo released the first handheld, the GameBoy. This was also hugely popular and still is, it beat of competition from segas gamegear and the atari lynx. The GameBoy has changed now, its smaller, in colour and recently nintendo released the GameBoy advanced.
The next big battle was between the Super NES and segas megadrive, it was close but the SNES became more popular with games like donkey kong country, mario kart, zelda and mario world helping them sell more.
Then things changed, sony released its first console the PSX, it took the market by storm and soon became top of the list, it had a huge range of games and outsold the rest of the competition. Its from here you all probably knows what happens, the N64, the dreamcast, PS2 followed and soon the GameCube and X-Box will be released.
All this has happened in about 20-25 years, the advances in software and hardware are huge. So what can this tell us about the future? Probably not alot as anything could happen, but if the pattern continues then the games and console which do come out in the future are going to visually great and fun to play. So heres to the future. It looks like the console market is going to grow and grow and grace us with better games and consoles.

Christ I'm bored
Others I come to work and write about games all day.
Some days I also try to post a few decent things in the Movies forum too.
Guess which kind of day today is?
Thats all that is keeping me sane right now.
You win the gameday yet? Can we stop with the posts now?
I'm just jealous, I cant write interesting things about games for toffee.
Now movies....don't get me started

Summer sucks
Yep. Roll on Autumn.
I hate this humidity.
My wife want me to take her to the seaside. I don't want to drive for an hour and a half in this.
I want to sit inside by a fan, and drink cold beer.
Or be at work with the air conditioning.
Sheesh...

It seems to be that ghosts from the past have already put the nails in the Dreamcasts coffin. The memory of the Saturn was too fresh in peoples minds, and not enough of Sega's franchises made their way to the Dreamcast.
Could the same fate fall upon the GAMECUBE? I think not, as Nintendo's own games for the N64 where highly entertaining. The major problem was a lack of third party support. With Nintendo moving away from a cartridge based system, more third parties are willing to supply the GAMECUBE with those much needed big franchises, like Resident Evil, SSX, FIFA, and possibly Final Fantasy.
Nintendo are strong believes in tradition, which is why we see characters like Luigi starring in games, but as they're also believers in originality and innovation, it's not you're typical platformer, but a ghost hunting game. Super Smash Bros: Melee will also feature characters from Nintendo's past, some of which have not been seen since the days of the NES.
Sony don't have a great deal of history in the market, but they've already made a name for themselves with the success of the PSX. Some would say that it brought gaming to the masses. This may or may not be true. Consoles and games were beginning to sell better, and to more mature gamers, before the birth of the Playstation. If seems to have been in the right place at the right time!
Of course, games developers mustn't get too caught up in the past. Sometimes it's right to leave those games for a while, and not ressurect them. Tomb Raider has become tired, but the movies will probably lead to another wave of games! Likewise Pokemon is becoming tired, with 6 games already available in handheld form. It needs to re-invent itself before returning as a GBA release.
The past of gaming has been full of surprises, with the tehnically superior very rarely winning the day (Atari Jaguar) so it's hard to udge what will come next.
I'll look back at the past of gaming fondly though, as it has given me some great gaming experiences.
