Well it looks like IBM and toshiba will be working on the processor and other chips that will feature in sony's future products and also in the PS3. Over the past few years the speed of processors has shot up and it looks like this new processor which has been called "the cell" could be at the top of the range. But don't worry if you have a PS2 and think they are going to release the PS3 soon, it won't be out for at least another 4-5 years.
So why would they tell us about this now? Maybe to let the likes of nintendo and microsoft know that sony are in the gaming industry for quite some time and enjoy the competition. Who knows?

So what does this mean for the future of gaming? Depends on how you define the future I guess but it looks like games could start to look like movies like toy story 2 and the recent film shrek. The only problem is that data to make graphics like these probably wouldn't fit on a DVD. So to make games with graphics as good as these animated movies we would need better storage devices. Here IBM could play another important part as they are due to release a new type of storage medium "holographic memory" within the next 3 years. If you want more info on the holographic memory there is some in my other post about "storage needs improving".

But how will all this affect the oposition, will it delay the releases? Microsoft has money and sadly in this day and age money is what gets you far so maybe they will unveal big plans for there next console (if they choose to make 1 after the x-box). Also Nintendo, they still have a large fan base which will sell them lots of consoles and games.
We will just have to wait and see what happens, but as a games fan news like this is good news to me.

This is categorically NOT rubbish as it WAS 16 PS2s strapped together. It can render photo-realistic graphics, no joke. I've seen a video of the jump scene from the Matrix being manipulated in real-time, with any camera angle.

It will improve and already has in some cases e.g. SSX manages to look sublime whilst other games don't. Judging from this I would say it was down to the devolopers to improve the games and not Sony. If some developers can produce great looking games then Sony are obviously providing the goods for them to do that.

Eeechy-wowa! *whistles* What a machine!

I think Sony should make an ingenious add-on that brings the specs of the PS2 equil to the X-Box.

A big mistake that is noticable is the horrible jaggies, some games (F-1, moto GP) can't be bothered to use FS-AA and as a result, the graphics are a bit of an eyesore.

The Dreamcast tackled this problem early... c'mon Sony!

That wasn't rubbish. They did indeed have a machine with the power of 16 PS2's, and shortly after, they had the same machine with the power of 64 PS2's.

It wasn't a console, though. It was called the GScube, featured 16 (and later 64) PS2 graphics running in parallel, and was used exclusively to produce real-time broadcast-quality CGI effects for TV broadcasting.
