Games are evolving so fast and arguable becoming more and more fun. I remember not so long ago, playing super Mario land on the SNES and thinking it just couldn’t get any better. I used to love the adventure platform style games like Mario and Sonic, and I hear a lot of people often say that they too miss this sort of game and layout.
However, I believe that games have moved forward and are always getting better, although designers are stressing the capabilities of impeccable graphics, I believe that the game-play has not been lost in these classic great fun adventure genre games. And it is all the more pleasing to see that Mario, Sonic and many others like them are still around and are still improving. For example, only the other day I was sat down playing the fantastic ‘Final Fantasy 10-2’ on the PS2. For those that love this sort of game will know just how long the ‘Final Fantasy’ games have been around and will have seen how well they have evolved.
The way that now games designers are becoming more daring and willing to push the boundaries of gaming is pushing the industry further and further. Many who have experienced it will know how fun online gaming is. It is simply fantastic, personally I really enjoy playing ‘Diablo 2’ or ‘War craft 3’ on the PC, which are also classic examples of brilliant games getting better and better and not just being dropped. It is great to see companies are willing to continue with sequels and in some cases pre-quells, which keep feeding our hunger for more. With these new games most often comes, better graphics, new worlds to explore, new items and options to utilise for further fun.
Many games now are also crossing genres and in most cases pulling it off successfully; when a masterpiece such as Zelda or Final Fantasy are released, it is great how these aren’t just Role Playing Games, but also ‘action’, ‘adventure’, ‘combat’ etc… Also Shoot-Em-Up games are evolving to account for different preferences, there are now such games where you can switch from 1st to 3rd person shooters which alter the gaming experience hugely but allows the user to play using their own settings if you like.
The same has happened to ‘Grand Theft Auto’, I always enjoyed the original on the PC, but lets face it, to say the graphics were a let down was an understatement. But that wasn’t a problem because it was (and still is great fun to play) but then came ‘GTA Vice City) Wow, what a game. It had evolved from a poor graphical game which was limited in area and surroundings to a game with a number of genres which work really well together, game play was still second to none, it was challenging and simply a credit to games in general. Now they are set to release the next instalment, which I have no doubts will be even bigger and better! Can’t wait!
It will be interesting to see how games have evolved in the next 5 or 10 years and see if we still have the likes of Zelda, Mario, Sonic, Final Fantasy and so on, and see if they have continued to get better or whether it gets to a point where companies begin to lose the plot and focus purely on new age games with great computer graphics and no fun game-play.
What do you think?
Particularly as new console with far greater capabilities are soon being released by the likes of Sony and Nintendo….
