In my opinion the E3 show in Los Angeles has summed up how good our favourite little black box is going to be. Whereas X-Box wasnt very impressive and Gamecube not being able to show off any quality software it was up to PS2 to produce all the hype.
I wasnt able to attend the E3 show, but from what I read in the magasines and saw on certain DVD's I can bravely say that I am impressed.And mind you the PS2 is not even one year old and it has already got some quality games. Ok there arent as many as people would expect but still look at the titles like Timesplitters and Red Faction. The developers are just discovering the true power of the machine and for the past few months have been trying to give us, passionate gamers, something to smile about. They can be excused for making some below-the-par games because PS2 is not easy to develop for. Well except 3DO for their appaling Army Men games.
Look at all the games coming our way. They make our jaws drop to the floor as soon as we see the graphics and make us stare in astonishment at the gameplay. Metal Gear Solid 2, Final Fantasy 10, WWF Smackdown!JBI, Jak & Daxter... the list goes on.In the next few months we will be playing the best games ever to be made. And again in about five years time we all will be saying "Look how appaling GT3 looks. The graphics are average..." And this is all because of the real power of the console. In few years time the games will be amazing to look at as the developers will understand the PS2 more and will be more confident about producing quality products.
You may think I am wrong but think back to 1995 when the first Ridge Racer came out, everyone was astounded. But now no-one but the die-hard fans remember how good that game was. No-one else cares because GT is around.
I was never in doubt that PS2 will succeed. Ever since the annopuncement that it is coming out in early 2000 in Japan, I knew, and I think so did everyone, that its going to be ace.
Seriously, was anyone that excited with the news on X-Box or Gamecube. Most people just said "Oh well, another console". Did anyone say that about Playstation 2? I doubt that.
We all have trusted Sony for a long time and I hope that we will for years to come.
And then came the announcement of the Hard Disk Drive for the PS2. This is going to change many people's lifes. Ok, some people may not be too enthusiastic about that but just think of all the possibilities...Playing games against your mates, kicking the c*** out of some cocky Australian or just surfing the net. Did Mr.Gates think of the online possibilities of his latest investment? Well, yeah but its all very unclear for now. And with certain online games announced at E3, you cannot stop fantasising about the future. SOCOM: Navy Seals, GT4, Tony Hawks 3...Again the list goes on.
And what is so annoying is that some people keep saying "Well, Gamecube's got Mario. So it must be better than PS2". Well the world doesn't just revolve around Mario. Nintendo is trying to get to The Promised Land by promoting their old heroes and villains. They are relying on the fact that Mario and co are going to help them succeed. PS2 has also got games that were so popular on PSone and other consoles. But Sony are also trying to explore new ground and bring us games that will be original and fun to play.
I may have bored some people with my talk here but I believe that PS2 will be on top of the gaming world for the next few years...That, until the PS3 comes out
