Who needs LIVE? In the near future, several pupils at our School/College, are goin to start running games tournaments, starting with the oh so great MK:DD!! Which is going to be as random as hell, but definately great. Presumambly there won't be that many people playing, so i'm going to enter in the chance that i will win :P I'm not sure how it will run... perhaps a World Cup Tour, and you get the winner from that :S... but i'm looking forward to it, and any following compos :P
what you are suggesting is an organised event with only limited people playing, such as weekly after skool with your mates for example. the online services, such as xbox live, are designed so that people can just whack on their xbox and play mo or mmo any time they want. this does not need organisation or accomodation to the same extent, so it is easier.
mk:dd is a quality game, and what you are going to do will be fun, but dont bash live because its not nintendo.
