I am going away for a week on holiday and would like to suggest an idea that I have been thinking about for some time, it was only till Tony mentioned yesterday that they would be removing the blue bar from the forums I thought my idea would be great.

A few months back I had a go at adding a bar to the right side of the age with loads of extra features on it, take a look

www.er-no.fsnet.co.uk/working.html

On the right you will see many different forum options, and I feel that if SR remove the left blue banner then at least some more options like the ones on my mockup would be great.... also like the date and month selection thing above the forum topics list....

...it would be nice to come back to a newly designed forum and it would look fresh...

er-no: give us the options...

:D Let me know what you think please Mr. Tony

It could kinda be done...

Since the system knows if a member is downloading a page...

And considering that anyone who has downloaded a page in the last say 5 (?) minutes is still online... then...

Whenever someone downloads a new page, the system checks to see which users have downloaded a page in the last 5 minutes... and lists these members handles...

----

More simply, users could log on and off... whomever is set as being logged on is considered to be on-line...

(as above, anyone considered on-line is dusplayed in the current users list)

whomever has logged off is off line... If no activity (posting, page access) is seen for 30 minutes or more, then the system automatically logs the user off and sets them to offline.

Like CoolDog I agree with M16's last paragraph. Many people say this would be a bad idea as some people like to lurjk and be quiet.
But I think it's brilliant, i did to a topic here in chat where you could tell people if you were online, you just say e.g Spider is online.
Some people took it seriously, some didn't. But I think there should be one that SR should make so that when you comoe on you automattically are on the page.

Did that make any sense???

I agree with all the other things you said but if they put this feature on the message boards then it would becaome a chat room and not a message board. Chat rooms use Java or advanced HTML. The meassage boards use simple HTML and are treated as individual webpages, so you cant tell wjo is where, it would not work. They would have to change the entire message board into a chat room and then It woulsnt work. Though the idea is great.

I too have a few things to say:

To make SR feel more relaxed and homely I think SR should change little things like “Edit your details” to, “Edit my details”.

If you glance up to the top of the screen you will see a blue bar, read it. I have pointed it out before but nothing has been done about it. It reads, “…discuss playstation2, ps2…” You have mentioned Sony’s PlayStation2 twice. Only minor but it makes the site look a little less professional.

When someone wins GAD or FAD on the forums the text is highlighted in a bright yellow. I love the idea but there is one problem. If the winning post happens to be the topic starter and the topic is two pages long you can not spot that it is a GAD winning post. It’s hard to explain but I am trying my best. The original message is always up the top of the page, no matter how many pages there are. This bit will not go yellow if someone wins GAD. I think it should do.

To stop all the silly chat about “who is online” and “where is everybody” there should me an option where you can tell who is online and who is off-line. This will not tell you if the person is on the Internet, just if he or she is browsing the site or not. This wills top a lot of pointless topics about “who is online” etc.

Cheers.
