1. 500,000 DVD players have been sold in the past 6 months.
2. 1/3 of all DVD players sold in the UK was bought in the last 6 months.
3. Estimates say that by the end of the year about 3 Million Players will have been sold in the UK
4. So by the end of the year 10% of households will have a DVD player.
5. 99% of the population "aware of the format"
6. Over 16 million DVD titles were sold last year.
Having seen the statistics I could not believe it! The humble DVD player is a consumer device, it's not a business tool, Toy or even a games console. It's in the same league as VHS players, Tivos, satellite TV boxes etc If we look back in history how long did it take VHS to get established? or Satellite TV? I bet more than 3 years.
Although I do still find the statistics interesting I can reflect sense upon the matter. Never have we had it so good, TV's for £80, VCR's for £70, Satellite receivers for FREE and of cause DVD players as low as £60 yes £60 although the average bargain price is about £130. So with such advanced technology so cheep this explains one of the reasons behind DVD's success but imagine if DVD only offered better Picture and Sound quality, would it have taken off as well? No is the simple answer consumers want more than to just watch a film. Take your typical film you watch it once and then it's put on your bookcase and stays there until there's nothing to watch On TV on a miserable winter night. Now take a typical DVD, Better sound and Picture but really that's for the perfectionist but Extra scenes, outtakes, directors commentaries, alternative endings, music videos etc etc That is what has made DVD players so popular, The Software (Films). If you want to prove my theory - Go down to your local Woollies or wherever pick up a VSH video and then the Same title in DVD, What do you notice? probably the price difference although if you shop around,SR for example it's minimal but now take a closer look at the VHS, you get the Film full stop, now look at DVD the Film, The music Video etc just like I said before that is why DVD players and software are so popular.
PS. If you don't believe me about the DVD players for £60 they were (were as in no more) BRAND NEW but maybe slightly marked Proline DVD 1000's on sale @A Famous High Street internet site.
