As I thought about this more I realised why I hadn’t bought a Dreamcast when it came out. It was Sony’s fault. They had built up my expectations of the PS2 so much that I snubbed the Dreamcast, as I ‘knew’ that the PS2 would be miles better. This could be counted as my fault but the reasons that I didn’t buy a Dreamcast stem from Sony. I had a Playstation and loved playing on it. It had some of the best games available and there was only one point in its life when I was thinking about buying another console (N64 and Goldeneye). After this success of the Playstation I thought that the PS2 would be well worth waiting for. All the hype in magazines and those weird ads also made me think I should wait and make the PS2 my next console, as it would be the best.
The way that Sony built up hype and used the success of its previous console to make people like me wait to get a PS2 has deprived me of a years worth of quality gaming. All that time when I had been searching the shelves for a good Playstation game among all the other mediocre titles, I could have been enjoying what the Dreamcast had to offer. I never even thought of this option at the time as Sony had a good reputation and Sega’s last console was not that great. Now, having recently noticed what I have been missing I am a bit more than gutted.
I also think now that the Dreamcast failed because of these lousy preconceptions held by people such as myself. It can’t have failed because it is a bad console because when I look at it, it seems to be superior or on an equal level to my PS2. Dreamcast has 4 controller ports, PS2 has 2 and the in-game graphics on the 2 year old Dreamcast games like ShenMue are on an even par or better than current PS2 games.
Don’t get me wrong, I like my PS2 but I feel I have missed out on a rather special console. There is a big difference between the games available for each console and the real kick in the teeth is that the games on the Dreamcast were more fun to play than those on the PS2. Games like Extermination and GT3 aren’t fun in the same way as Chu Chu Rocket and Samba. I look at my collection of PS2 games and find out to my surprise that the two games I have played most are Crazy Taxi and Fur Fighters, both ports from the Dreamcast.
I now want a Dreamcast. I want it next to my PS2. I want my PS2 to suffer the shame of being neglected for a time, whilst I catch up on my missed gaming. I want it to see that I have now finally discovered the Dreamcast and for the immediate future my money will be spent on DC games. It may be an ineffective protest but it will make me feel better and tide me over till I become a multi-millionaire and buy Sega, make a new console and ensure that the Sega name and their fun games live on forever.
Ha, that’ll teach you for depriving me of quality gaming Sony!
Now, how will I become a multi-millionaire? Hmmmmm…
Any help?
The Dreamcast rocks. That's because it's noisy, but it's an excellent gaming machine too.
I've FINALLY reached the end of disc 1 on Skies Of Arcadia... I suggest everyone buys this game, and starts to dream about becoming a pirate, like I am.
Yes indeed, I shall be a pirate, and I will rule the seas.
Although i have to say it Sony's marketing department obviously did a damn good job!
I wonder what would have happened if Sega had employed them 3 years ago......
> JSR is class, those lucky Xbox beggars!
Bonus its most probably going to the PS2 and GameCube!
80% sure of it!
:D
